Study reveals rocketing sense of entitlement on U.S. campuses.

Check your ego at the door.

Psychologist Jean Twenge and her colleagues compiled the data and found that over the last four decades there's been a dramatic rise in the number of students who describe themselves as being 'above average' in the areas of academic ability, drive to achieve, mathematical ability, and self-confidence.
But in appraising the traits that are considered less invidualistic - co-operativeness, understanding others, and spirituality - the numbers either stayed at slightly decreased over the same period.
Researchers also found a disconnect between the student's opinions of themselves and actual ability.

You mean, "study reveals nothing we didn't all know already."

 It makes me really sad. Just like the old example that American schoolchildren believe they perform best on standardized math exams, but only achieve about the 16th best scores.

This is what happens when you wrap children in cotton wool. They have never experienced disappointment, or failing at something. Because the people in charge, pretend they have never failed at anything.

This thread might get intense in a minute. Personally, I blame global warming.

I believe that's a very good assessment of what we see going on. Little Joey needs to know he isn't very good at soccer and either improve or move on to something else. At some point they have to know life isn't all win win.

Interestingly this has been a point of contention within my family. Everyone before me has at least one post-graduate degree (both parents, and my sister has her Ph.D in neuroscience). I will be finishing undergrad in the not too distant future, and I have said I didn't intend to walk for my undergrad (and still don't). My mom has shit a brick at this, but the fact remains, as far as I'm concerned, finishing undergrad doesn't mean shit.

My time where I am has been filled with fucking whiners "oh, this was on the test but you didn't tell us it would be, you need to curve or you're unfair". Hey, fuckstick, in real life, you have to figure shit out for yourself. "Ermagherd! My dad didn't buy me a new car!" Really? Buy a clapped out e30 and be happy like 90% of this forum. The American dream is dead because no one wants to work for it anymore.

Yeah, a little personal responsibility, followed by a cut down in the "I am so f*cking special everyone elses needs are subordinate to mine department" would go a long way. We are all absolutely replaceable and are only 1/~7,000,000,000 folks.

You mean those most dominant and successful country in the world that mouth breathes Americas superiority in everything from athletics, intelligence, military, and economic power has created entitled people who believe they are what they preach. Shocking news, people see success and think they should have it with little to no work because successful traits were never taught or displayed from them other than see other people's success and hearing about how great everything is here.

Thank you for that....about 12-15yrs ago when I was still teaching Karate, we would have small tournaments at our school to prepare those who wanted to compete(read: work hard to win) in the larger regional or national tourneys. The top (3) in any division placed and the rest were 'finishers'. One parent said to me it's unfair that everyone isn't a winner and that everyone should get a trophy. Fortunately for them I had too much respect for the school and didn't tell them what I thought of their attitude or their kid. These kids were about 8-10yrs old at that time. They are now college grads....
