I've been using http://www.icdsoft.com/ for almost 5 years for my own sites and all my customers. it's inexpensive, very fast and extremely reliable. I could use more space but they don't really charge that much for extra, and they give you more bandwidth than a personal site could ever use.

I used to host my own sites in my bedroom closet 'till Comcast started blocking port 80. Now I use colo hosting from a friend, as well as DreamHost. I get 120+ gigs of bandwidth/month, unlimited mysql databases, nice user control panel, user accounts, the list goes on. Its pretty perfect. It cost me $9/year for the hosting which included a domain.
Oh, 1and1 is also pretty nice from what I've heard.

I use http://www.crystaltech.com/ as they are relatively inexpensive and have lots of features. For free hosting I have used http://www.1asphost.com/.

That's the company I admin for. We're pretty much one of the top dogs as far as hosting technology is concerned. Its a sister-company to valueweb/affinity/winsave/hostsaveMichael Spiegle
