This thread scares me because I was thinking of a Cherokee. Is it always just simple crap like this that can be rigged in a pinch or does the transmission just fall out randomly?
I've got a 2000 Cherokee Classic, and love mine. Solid, basic suspension and driveline. Simpler is more reliable. But if you get the Classic (or can find a Limited), they'll have some of the basic creature comforts like CD, power windows, overhead display, and stuff. The Sport is a pretty basic vehicle. I never noticed until I bought mine, but there are still a sh*t load of cherokees on the road (old and new). There's gotta be a reason why they built the same car for 16 years.
I would only buy a Cherokee. Very reliable truck, with some really badass offroading capabilities. I took mine out last weekend and boy was I impressed! 3.5" lift w/32" tires are gonna be ordered soon for her.
My gf's 97 had the same problem, can't remember what exactly the fix was. I'll see if she still has the paperwork somewhere. And yes Jeeps do suck. After dealing with her 99 Grand Cherokee I will never buy a Chrysler product much less a Jeep. I spent a month in winter without heat on the passenger side, which was finally fixed under warranty only to break again a little over a year later to the tune of $1200. It pulled to the right even after countless replaced parts/alignments. The rear driveshaft was replaced 3 times. The A/C system leaked/smelled/made you cry. The brakes warped every 5-10k miles even after they replaced the calipers, rotors and pads with "updated" parts. And tons of other things broke that I can't even remember right now. Yet people will still pay $40k for these cars.
etasport's family has a 96 grand cherokee 5.2l with over 200k on it now... They've done some work to it, but no tranny or engine related. Pretty sure some work on the diffs if I recall. He always has some good jeep input.
Cherokee's seem to be hit or miss. You either get a reliable one that can go for 300k or one that implodes past 40k.
Ill agree to that. While I seem to have the only 93 grand cherokee in existance with the stock transmisson and almost a quarter millon miles. This is wtih countless towing trips including a 4500 lb snowmobile trailer. The 5.2 is strong and humiliated v10 fords on uphill grades while towing more weight.
The engine and transmisson currently have 206k. The transfer case has been replaced, and is IMO a week link on the v8s because of the quadratrac all wheel drive. The stock unit is a viscous coupler while the remans use direct drive. The front axle has been replaced, and the driveshafts were balanced. All this was to correct a moderate vibration at speeds over 80 mph. This vehicle rides amazing, and is very comfortable.
My dad talked to some chrysler big wigs while pitching them some brake information, about owning a 93 grand. He told them he was going to get 300k out of it and they laughed at him. They also seemed quite suprised to know it already had 136k at the time with the work load we were demanding of it.
