    Nicker Knob as well.

For modern stuff they are not really needed in the least. They are for things with no power steering so you can get more leverage on the wheel to help turn it Really handy for backing up a wagon or trailer. Also good for tractor and other off road stuff so if you get into a rut or hit a log or rock you can just let go of the knob rather than have your wrist broken as spokes of the the wheel try and rip your hand off . You just have remember to get you hand the FUCK out of the way, and make sure to let go or the knob will bust your wrist too.

When I was a kid I leaned that lesson dam fast and nearly ripped my hand off and very very badly sprained my wrist when hit a unseen deep rut perpendicular to my direction of travel while Piloting a 1954 international Supper M with narrow front at about 2/3 throttle 2ed gear cutting hay. Spun the wheel around about 6 times in about 1/8 of a second, you cant clutch in, throttle down, Kill the PTO and break that fast on those old McCormick's

they are popular in the JDM crowd over seas. I enjoy driving cars and trucks with them but would never get my own.
