    Talk to me about Z4's

Does anyone have advice on z4s? I'm looking at possibly getting one but don't know much about them.

Are there certain years to stay away from? Are there certain platforms to stay away from (m vs. non-m)? Any big known problems?

I was looking at getting an M version but also like the price points of the non-m versions. I'm looking at around $20k and it looks like M versions go for about $25-29k.

My ideal would be under 40k miles, silver/charcoal/dark blue/dark gold, 5 spd.

Any advice would be great. Thanks. If I were to get one, anyone have advice on an exhaust system that will open up the tone of the car?

I am going to assume you mistyped and meant you want a 6 speed, since most, if not all 5 speeds are 2.5l cars. The 2.5, at least with the auto has almost no appeal and will have no resale value when the time comes. I would strongly urge you to wait for a higher mileage M model to come into your price range or get a 3.0 with the sport package. I would also urge you to test drive a Miata, as it is a better car in every way save power output. As far as reliability check Consumers Report.

Still, bottom line, unless your heart is absolutely set on a Z4 look at other cars as it is not a good touring car, nor is is a sporty car, nor is it particularly good looking, and I have a feeling you won't like living with it.

          Don't get a 2.5. Get a 3.0si if you must.

Forget the z4 man buy a e46 m3 with that cash, then you can let me drive it. Also I'm a bigger fan of the Z3 M-Coupe over the Z4, I just hate the way Z4's look.

I have had the Capri for a long time, it was a hand-me-down.

Go test drive one of you have not. I test drove a 2.5 and a month later a 3.0 and both have about as much soul as an e36 when compared to the level of chassis communication from an e30. Z3m or is test drive a 135, been meaning to do that...
That said, the z4 chassis takes the design of the unibody to the sport bike level, everything is integrated and uses everything else. Finding usable jack points on z4's is quite the trick. The non-m cars just don't feel eager to breathe imho.
...what hasn’t been done to an m20 yet?

A Z4 M coupe would be an awesome car. S54 + 6 speed manual. Anything less and I feel there are better options for your dollar.

Just buy a Miata MX-5 and be done with it!

far more reliable, cheaper to maintain and to insure.

If it doesn't have enough juice, you can always opt for the turbo'd version
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!
