Sorry should have specified. I'm looking at Z4Ms. I'm also considering Z3Ms. I'm wanting to know common problems or maintenance that I should make sure is done. (Like a timing belt on an e30)
Talk to me about Z4's

I don't fit in miatas. I'd get an s2k if I fit in them. Drove my dads over winter break but I just can't seem to get comfortable. The z4 seems to be more comfortable than the z3.
I'm looking to spend under 25k. It'll be a summer car and although I like coupes more, I'm looking for a convertible.Last edited by Mastrcruse; 02-23-2013, 09:30 AM.Comment

Thanks for the info. Are there any particular years that are better than others? My price range seems to land me at 2006-2008s with 25-45k milesComment

Fun cars. The E85/86 is probably the best chassis BMW has built in 30 years. Engine and suspension components wise, it's mostly e46 stuff, so if you've got familiarity there they're pretty easy to work on. It's a purpose built chassis and almost semi-exotic, at least compared to most BMWs.
The roadsters are surprisingly stiff, take a look at the frame/chassis in a cutaway, the M roadsters are amazing.
Early year non-M cars had some issues with the steering rack and some hydraulic issues on the roofs, but the later cars have been pretty solid. M cars have all the usual assorted issues with the S54, but nothing really specific to the car that I've seen. Biggest thing I don't like is the "adaptive" e-throttle, but an S54 car avoids that.
As for daily livability, they're easy cars to get along with. Tons of room in the trunk, and plenty spacious. They make great highway cruisers and commuters, it's just a solidly built car. The Z3M is a fun car, but if you're talking chassis and build quality compared to the E85, it's like comparing a mid nineties korean car.
25k should probably be able to find you a decent S54 car, if you get a chance, try driving an 07-08 3.0si as well, you can probably get more car in the 19-20k range there and still get 260hp and a nice suspension setup.

we had a really nice 3.0Si I think it was an '08 Coupe back in 08/09. I loved driving that car!!
it was a blast and the exhaust even sounded great in the car. My only gripe about the car was the run on flat tires.
the N52 motor is a bit of a luck thing. they sometimes wear a groove in the head from the rings on the cams which causes a loss of oil pressure and sets motor fault codes. an expensive fix. (head needs to be replaced).....Comment

Are there any signs or maintenance that can prevent the grooving in the n52?
Ill also go look at the 3.0si's as I didn't give them concideration. What reliability like on the s54 vs. n52?
Thanks for the extremely useful feedback.Comment
