Any recommendations for a low cost telescope? I'll be in an area far away from any city lights and think it would be interesting.

Unless you are going to spend the money to buy one that can position/aim itself for you, I would strongly recommend you spend the money on some really nice binoculars. You will find it quite difficult to use a standard telescope and will likely get frustrated with it to the point that you will not even use it. There are a bunch of things you can find/see with good binoculars and... you'll actually be able to find them!

Where you going this time keith????
I think I would ecco twoJ up there from what I remember as a kid when I was kinda into those things.
Or maybe get a decent Spotting scope thats more compact and fhave better optical glass in them than the el-cheapo telescopes. Nikon prostaff 16-48x60mm is a very very good spotting scope for the price point of about 400 bucks. I assume that more than your wanting to spend though, but if you do any kind of shooting or wild life watching its a great piece of glass for you back country adventures. I think nikon even offers a Digi-mount for it for many of their Compact P&S cameras as well. I was going to buy a GOOD Spotting scope until borrowed a buddies Prostaff. I am going to get the pro staff now!!!!Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

Ahhhhh sounds like a fun trip if you like High desert ;)
Also aims it self is one that has a motorized tracking base and has night sky map program that you can just pick what you want to see, and it will orient and point itself to it based on your selection and stay on target.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.
