Who is using a steering wheel/pedals combo? Any feedback you can give on your set up? I've been an avid Gran Turismo enthusiast dating back to the original. I've had a couple of wheel/ pedals combos between the PS1 & 2 and never been happy with them.

                      here's mine:

I'm sure I can go faster, but I've never clocked such an epic time.
                      Make the bastard chase you.

I played for an hour the other night, I ran probably 20 laps all between 2:14.1 and 2:14.2. I'm so consistent that I can't even see the ghost car most of the time. I literally can not even pick up a tenth of a second.

                        WTF?!?!

I just ran a 2:13.3 the night before, I have no idea what's different now. So frustrating...

I may have to de-mod my M3 and give this a go.

I have a Logitech G27. I hated wheels back in PS2 days as well, but a buddy got a G25 a little while after GT5 came out and I knew I had to get one. G27 was announced so I waited, and got lucky on craigslist.

The feedback from the wheel is awesome, and is quite realistic. You can get a better feel for loss of grip, though of course this is still just a simulation. I can't say for sure if it makes you better but with practice, I think people probably have more potential on the wheel. You do lose the ability to flick the wheels lock-to-lock by moving your thumb an inch, for what that's worth. I haven't been able to get any respectable times on these challenges, but I am out of practice.

The gearbox and clutch pedal are a bonus with Logitech's setup, not really used except for fun on easier GT mode events, or with a multiplayer situation. The paddles are great but I wish the feedback was a little better, it's a slight electrical switch type of very soft click (you can get more feedback by banging past the click and contacting the paddle stem to the switch housing which is fine, but requires effort).

The pedals are amazing, they are each uniquely weighted. The throttle is smooth with constant resistance (not much), the brake is nice and firm and builds resistance to the floor, and the clutch is between the two with a buildup of pressure as well.

Build quality is very impressive, real leather wheel, aluminum pedals and paddles. I highly recommend you pick up one of these more modern wheels or maybe somehow try one out. A solid foundation/seat is essential, without one it's an exercise in frustration. This means another piece of furniture for me, but I do love hacking around on it from time to time. If you play a lot, I'd call it a must-have. Check out youtube for videos of people setups, some interesting stuff out there.

i've got a G25, mounted to one of these:

mine's the older version so it lacks the adjustable seat and doesn't have the brace that they added to stabilize the wheel pedestal, but i still like it a damned lot.
