When cops blow past you no lights on the highway

alright, so someone please verify this or educate me on the subject. when a police car rips passed you at like 90 mph on the highway and has no flashing lights what so ever whats the deal? is that considered speeding or can they just do that? im wondering because one time i was driving at night in traffic on the highway and all the sudden a cop car flies past at what i would guess to be over 100 with nothing but regular headlights on. about 30 seconds later a second car goes by also definitely over 100. i found this retardedly dangerous since i didn't even see them coming in any mirrors because of the traffic and i was considering switching into that lane. it would have probably been a fatal if not serious injury crash. oh and this took place in New York (where i live) if the laws change state to state or whatever. input is appreciated.

They shouldn't be speeding unless the lights are on, but who is going to pull them over? I have even seen a cop flick on his lights just to get through a red light. Wish I had an all access pass to drive it like I stole it.

It could have been a call they were going to. On the freeway it's generally easier to fly past people with the lights off. When they are on people get stupid, all slowing down and doing unusual lane changes.. don't bother unless they are trying to pull someone over.
If traffic was heavy and people wouldn't get out of the way then they would kick them on.

i forgot to mention about 2 minutes before hand i saw they had a guy pulled over. i see you have valid points. i generally dont mind if a cop goes by at like 85 or so but these guys were well over 100. at night, in traffic. fuckin dangerous whether its a cop or not. a car at going 100 is a car going 100 you know what im sayin? i think it was more dangerous to have lights off at that speed i literally didn't even see them. i could have pulled out and been seriously injured so thats not cool to me. cops are cops yeah so they're above the law. doesn't mean they're all smart though.

I followed a cop on the highway once, years ago. We were ticking up to around 100 give or take for probably 15 miles. He proceeded to hope over to the other lane and slam on his brakes and pull me over. Not for a ticket mind you but just to warn me he was hopping off to his post to radar speeders and there were a few more a ways up so without him I should pull it back to 75 max.

thanks for sharing this. maybe next time it happens and i happen to have both a car with a nut sack under the hood and a nut sack of my own at the time ill just pull out and follow them. i dont care if they write me a ticket as long as they write one for themselves too. see ya in court piglets. this is assuming its illegal for them to speed like that no lights. is it illegal?

Lol, I used to hop in behind them and rescue squad when they were flipping all the lights to green. I stopped when one gave me a dirty look and proceeded to hop off the highway, then got back on and followed for a good while.
