No, its not illegal.thanks for sharing this. maybe next time it happens and i happen to have both a car with a nut sack under the hood and a nut sack of my own at the time ill just pull out and follow them. i dont care if they write me a ticket as long as they write one for themselves too. see ya in court piglets. this is assuming its illegal for them to speed like that no lights. is it illegal?

Common practice in NY,CT,MA and VT. Called shift change before and after. I see it repeatedly on limited access roads.alright, so someone please verify this or educate me on the subject. when a police car rips passed you at like 90 mph on the highway and has no flashing lights what so ever whats the deal? is that considered speeding or can they just do that? im wondering because one time i was driving at night in traffic on the highway and all the sudden a cop car flies past at what i would guess to be over 100 with nothing but regular headlights on. about 30 seconds later a second car goes by also definitely over 100. i found this retardedly dangerous since i didn't even see them coming in any mirrors because of the traffic and i was considering switching into that lane. it would have probably been a fatal if not serious injury crash. oh and this took place in New York (where i live) if the laws change state to state or whatever. input is appreciated.
sincerely

Nobody messes with em. Plain and simple. I used drive a lot on, and just before what's called Mount Up Aka shift change you will see inbound state police commonly traveling we over the posted limit.
It happens. Not often someone screws with state troopers.Comment

I see it all the time in Maryland. Most of the time it's cause one lives up here in Western MD and works in Baltimore. When i worked in Hagerstown , just about every moring i get passed by one or two going 90mph+.

so i did a little research. basically it looks like if an emergency vehicle is not responding to a call and is speeding no lights thats as bad as you and i speeding (in NY) so you can fuck with the cops but you gotta guess if they're responding or not. But if its unreasonable speeds or reckless endangerment then the cop is not really covered by the law. But "unreasonable" is a bit subjective you know, as many cop involving laws areComment

I'm just happy they're going right past me. Better than pulling me over.
What really gets me is when they're talking on the phone and driving. That's just dangerous no matter who it is. And it's illegal here in MD.1993 Laguna M50 "Helen"

I didn't say cut them off. If the speed limit is 65 and they are going 100+ even a normal lane change they would struggle to miss you. If they didn't have their lights on they are in big trouble. Cops are not above the law and should be treated as such, they just enforce. Just make sure you have a camera rolling somewhere.Comment

this also before you change lanes you have to make sure it's safe so even if they smashed into you, it would have been your fault because they are cops and just say "I just started speeding up to go to a call."It could have been a call they were going to. On the freeway it's generally easier to fly past people with the lights off. When they are on people get stupid, all slowing down and doing unusual lane changes.. don't bother unless they are trying to pull someone over.
If traffic was heavy and people wouldn't get out of the way then they would kick them on."I wanna see da boat movie"
