I call a lot of people boss within context though.....it's better then saying bro....I'm not surfer boy enough for that. If its management or older people I use sir, it just shows respect for their position.

It wasn't boss, but rather the work "Chief" that got one of our branch managers in huge trouble. Really cool guy, called everyone chief until he called a new hire.....who happened to be Indian..."chief". That situation got pretty crazy....needless to say...we are no longer allowed to call people "chief" at my company hahaha.

Better than being called asswipe, which is what I'd like to call half the people we deal with at work.

But for serious, watch Shawshank Redemption and stick to "sir".

I am a Project Superintendent for a large construction company, I have heard them all over the years. I stick to Sir and Mam with generaly everyone But with my Hispanc guys they like Jefe or patron. I make it a point to use sir because it covers up for the fact that i cant remember their name.

I don't like being called boss, I find it patronizing and usually think less of the person who says it though don't get huffy and puffy about it since it's probably the only conversation I'll have with the person anyway.

You really can't go wrong with "Sir". And if you want to sound like you're patronizing someone, pronounce it "Sar".

Save the informal greetings for after you get to know the person a bit. Your initial greeting should always be sir or ma'am

I hate getting "Guy"ed more than anything at my job.

I almost always greet men with sir, even younger men.
I ALWAYS greet women with a Miss. not ma'am. NEVER ma'am.
