I'm in pretty much the same boat. I've been at my current Job as a temp working through a staffing agency since August. I've asked my manger a few times about permenent hire and he tells me he would like to hire me and the other 2 temps currently in our department but he hasn't recived the permission from his superiors to do so yet. it sucks because I know one other temp has been there a few months longer than me, so if any one of us is gonna get permenent it would be him first. I like working for the company and just having a paycheck in general but I'm starting to fell like it will be temp untill I leave. Im trying to save money so I can have a safety net if/when I do leave but thus far that hasn't worked at all. Anybody know if you can get unemployment if you get let go from a temp position you have been at for over 6 months?

This is something I have wondered as well.

I just got word they have a position opening soon for me to take advantage of so maybe I may get my permanent status after all.

I'm actually surprised this is still going on. It has been well documented that full time employees are more productive. It costs money to train new employees, so hiring temps all the time isn't particularly cost effective. Yes, you have to pay for time off, etc., but you get a lot more productivity out of current employees.

And temp agencies do get 15-15% on top of what you get paid, so it's not like it's free for them to have the ability to fire at will.

I would like to know if anyone has been or is in the same position that I am in currently, receiving no benefits, but performing work that permanent employees perform.
This was exactly my scenario until today! As I punched in, the owner Don gave me a raise from $10 to $14 an hour and told me that he really appreciates the work I do! No benefits, but I don't get shafted on the temp agency cut anymore. I only work when the company is busy and needs an extra hand, or there is machining that needs to be done. So I would say an average of 25 hours every other week. If you have been working full time for almost two years I would try to sit down and talk to someone in a position to help you out. That seems pretty shitty to me... Good luck with your employer! :)

This is what I was saying to them that, if at all you are saving any money, it is pennies on the dollar and completely not worth it. They literally had to fire about 5 people just to get one position filled because every person they hired for it could not do the job properly. Then they have me and others who are fully capable, but do not get the chance to show true potential because we are limited by our temporary status.

That is seriously fucked up, I would sue the shit out of them!

Nice boss you got there, my boss is stingy as fuck!! But the problem for me is, even if I talk with my boss, he has to talk with his boss who has to talk to his boss, that's the downside with these gov't jobs.
