Anybody here work through a Temp Agency?

I have been working through a temp agency for the Montgomery County Gov't as an imaging operator for nearly two years now and I am unsure on what the laws behind temp employment are as far as the duration of time I've been working here.
I would like to know if anyone has been or is in the same position that I am in currently, receiving no benefits, but performing work that permanent employees perform.

Talk to the company you work with about hiring you as a normal employee. They have to pay 10-25% fee to use the agency. They'd probably rather pocket that money and swap it for some benefits to you.

Well see, here's the problem with with my company. The Montgomery County Gov't only opens a limited amount of positions as full time County employee. Currently they have one position pending release for applicants for the job I am doing, but are waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles footing around with it because they can save some money hiring temps instead.

With me being a temp, I am excluded from sick days, vacation days, personal days, health benefits, etc. Pretty much everything that you would get as a full timer is not given to us temps. I've been with the county as a temp for nearly two years and still have yet to get a chance at applying for the full time position since they will not release it for application.

It seems to me that they would rather just hire temps and keep them for as long as the temps want to stay and once they get fed up and leave, they hire another temp. It seems like there should be some sort of law or policy preventing companies from abusing temp employees in such a manner. I have seen the invoices of what they pay to the agency versus what we receive as pay from the agency. The agency cuts at least forty percent from the company payout and pays the rest to us. Maybe I'm biased, but it doesn't sound right that they can keep us as temps for so long.

That's how it is here in ohio too. My guess is there are no laws saying they have to hire you. Basically it all comes down to saving a buck. Cuz the money they pay to the temp agency to have you pales in comparison to what they would have to shell out to have you full time with all the ins and 401k and such. And pretty much if you don't like it the next temp guy will.

We have a factory in my town that regularly has temps for years before they MAY get hired in.

I used to, until the company I was contracting for laid off 20%. I got a call around 5pm from an angry sounding woman telling me I didn't have to come in the next day, or any day after that.

My boss knew nothing of it. I went to work the next day anyway to say my goodbyes. Worked there for about a year

Sheesh, seems like it's just a shitty position to be in with no way of coming out without leaving and getting a new job somewhere else. I really thought there had to be some rules restricting how long temps can stay temps before having to become permanent.

Nope, there sure isn't. Thats the beauty of temp employees. You can hire them and give them no leverage. Then when they complain, just send them packing and usher in the new temps.

I was in the same position a couple of years ago. After 4 months of working there, I deliberatly went outta my way to ensure that I was getting all kinds of training and secuirty clearances, just to get on their payroll so I could get paid more. I complained to my boss and his boss that I wasn't even making enough $ to pay my rent, and after a lengthy discussion b/t the two of them, they decided to let me go. I wasn't too shocked nor harmed, as I really didn't wanna work there anymore anyway

It irritates the staff who have to train them (the temps), and overall they are just shooting themselves in the foot when they need to have ppl. to rely on to get the job done.
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

I am pretty sure I am a temp, but the two terms are quite confusing. I was brought into the County through a temp agency. I am not considered an employee of the county, I use the temp agency's payroll system and I'm paid through them. But in all honesty, I don't know if that means I'm a temp or a contractor because I hear both terms being thrown around when we are referred to.

Don't count on this changing any time soon. As the cost of full time people goes up many companies are working up more part times and temps. I have read where some are going 90 to 99% part time. At this point be glad your getting work and paid.

damn thieves! Here in Germany those asshole temp companies are all over the place. All of the huge companies (Bosch and co.) only hire though them, because it is easy to lay people off if things slow a bit.

if you want to be hired as full time then work to get on there or find another job. your only being taken advantage of because you have let them.
