    Quick paypal question

    Hey all,

I'm about to make a transaction through paypal with a guy, and he's suggested/asked twice now that I send the money as a "gift". I've used paypal plenty before but I don't think I've ever needed to do that. Whats he getting at? Is there a reason why he wants the cash as a gift? I found him on a site thats geared towards trading and selling and he has plenty of good consumer feedback saying he's reliable and on time. Am I just over thinking this?

    Thanks,
    <---Goodnight, sweet prince

He wants it as a gift to avoid having to eat the 3% charge paypal will stick him with. It's against paypal policies. The alternative is to take what you owe, tack on 3% and send, or just tell him to be honest and have him eat the 3%.

When people ask me to do that, I just add the extra 3% and send it to them for goods. That way, if they screw you, you bought insurance for $3 per $100 in purchase.

I always tack the 3% charge on my prices when I'm selling something. It's the seller's responsibility to account for that.

OK so, say I send him the money as "for goods" and he throws a little fit about it even though I went ahead and added the extra 3% on top, at this point can I tell him to just forget it and refund me the money? And if he doesn't I can file a claim with PP right?

If you're buying from abroad, it's noramally 5% fees to cover the currency conversion cost too.:D

If he throws a fit about you covering the 3% charge, personally, then I would tell him to go fuck himself.

I think i would try to propose that you pay the 3% before you send the money. If he has a problem with you paying 103% of the asking price, something fishy is going on.

That seller deserves to be burned. If he bitches about someone paying his own fees I would suspect he is trying to tax dodge or something. Unless it's something you really want report him to PP an get a refund, send them evidence too, if you like and they can claim their 3% on the rest of his transactions if they really want.

Thanks, I went ahead with this route, it seems the most logical to me. If he isn't cool with it I can take my money elsewhere. I'm sure this guy is on the level, if he's been a member on this forum since '08 and has actively sold things I doubt he'd still be around if he ripped people off, he would have been reported.

I'll usually tack the 3% on. I know I hate selling something for $100 and my PP rolls up $97. If I sell something, I make sure to add PP fees in so I get a nice, even number.

I also try to return the favor and pay a little more to cover the fees, as most who I've recently bought things from will notice.

                        ;)

                          Thanks,
yeah, he wants it as a gift because then he doesn't pay a paypal fee, and if he doesn't want to, he doesn't have to send you anything and you're screwed.

NEVER send money as a gift. also, don't ever send me money as a gift either - because it doesn't pass along shipping info, so I'll have no idea where to ship your stuff. I'd rather eat the $2 and have a shipping address than have to dick around trying to hunt you down for it.
