    Web Server Help Needed

    Hey
Anyone have any good suggestions on how to use a 866 PIII as a web server? Where do I start? I have a 7MB static IP DSL line coming soon.

    Should I use Linux?

    Luke

What are you planning on doing with your server?

Do you need mysql? sql? php, asp, ssi? etc.

Do you get static ip's with your isp? <--Yes from what I see

      what are you hosting exactly?

Do you own a domain? Does it include DNS hosting?

      =)

Meh, I used to run my own closet campers. It was cool and all, but impractical. My hosting now cost me $10/year and came with a free domain. I get a tb of bandwidth a month and like 20 gigs of space, as well as php 4/5, unlimited mysql db's, the list goes on. Thats way less than the cost of electricity alone. Too bad the deal is over :P If you keep your eyes open, you may be able to find inexpensive hosting. IMO, having your own box isnt worth the hassle.

it's much better to pay somebody else to host your server, especially if you don't really know much about it. they will take care of backups, upgrades, maintenance, security, power outages, etc, and it will be much faster than what you have on your own. I pay $50 a year for domain registration and hosting, my server has never gone down in the 5 years I've been using their services, and it is very fast.

focus on selling stereos and leave the server administration to the pro's... :)

The only 2 questions I can answer here is no, I haven't bought a domain. I want a webpage for my shop, pics of installs, that kind of stuff.

No sales of any kind, no special stuff, just like a glorified yellow pages ad.

My roommate and I use dyndns.org to compensate for the dynamic i.p. Not for hosting, just remote desktop.... I don't recall what the cheapest dedicated I.P. plans are in this area, but I wouldn't even bother with it...

              +1 Off-site hosting

I'd stick with a hosting company, or 3rd party. Mainly due to the fact that running a server from your own personal connection can get somewhat tedious (been there, done that, I now store everything in a datacenter with my equipment).

If you do want hosting, toss me a PM, we could work something out if you wanted.
