I am joking but my wife has a friend that does this about three times a week and he makes an extra 500 bucks a month.well....used to do it I guess. He passed away recently. Seriously.
I have nothing to add but this needs to be quoted.

Also, this. I work in parts and I've done my fair share of flipping tires that came off of cars, selling cat converters, my dad is a mechanic and has a truck so he takes all the scrap metal to the recylcers, gets like $100 a month after his gas to drive to the scrappers. A hustle isn't always something illegal or shady.

that said, time in the sandbox sucked. you really want to go to afghanistan?

what military MOSs are you considering, and will they apply anywhere in the civilian world?
No, dont really want to go to Afghanistan. My family wouldnt want me anywhere near there. Which is why I was considering the Guard, I guess my thinking that "Oh all The NG does is help their state in state of emergencies and provide Aide to Hurricane/Natural Disasters" Was wrong. I mean, I really like helping people. But I dont think thats gonna work like that.

And I feel lazy now that Im only working 40 hours a week, I was ethier working 75 hours a week or working 30 and going to school full time.

I mean how are half the kids on here affording their builds, when I cant even afford a set of tires? What am I doing wrong. I know part of it is due to the fact that i have $150 a Week in expenses (Tool bills, gas) to do with the job im at now. Considering getting a job at a shop down the street that would pay a bit better and be literally a mile away. I could bike there if i wanted. But I wouldnt be working on anything I like.

yeah, i joined the NG as an engineer because i thought: what happened w/ Katrina was fucked up, my career was not going so great at the time (as i mentioned earlier, i needed an attitude adjustment), and hey, it's the corps of engineers who handles that, right? maybe i can help my country and get my shit together at the same time.

my very first drill weekend out of AIT (which was cool- breach buildings and clear rooms, blow shit up, i got this. but i couldn't fix a levee at gunpoint) we got our advance orders to go to Iraq. i got particularly "lucky" and wound up attached to Marines in Anbar province (Ramadi, Fallujah, Taqaddum).

before and after deployment i bothered leadership to send me on humanitarian missions- floods up in WA, wildfire evacs here in CA, etc- never got to do anything like that.

i'm not saying that's what your experience will be like- when i transferred from WA to CA i showed up at my new unit and maybe 20% of the soldiers had a combat patch- the 1Sgt and readiness NCO were tankers with 20+ years in service and had never deployed, while some of the guys i went to Iraq with were on their 3rd tour. some of it's luck of the draw, some of it's people making rank fast enough to take advantage of privileges, and some of it's just outright shitbaggery.

nor am i telling you not to do this- but the army will get what it wants out of you, so you should be thinking about how you'll benefit from your time in service, whether that's a new knowledge set from training, GI Bill, the VA home loan program, or whatever- not just doing it because you're bored, or want more money- drill pay is not that much.

So the NG gets sent to Iraq to help out. Well fak that's not really gonna work out great . I was hoping on staying In the states. Because id love to be on "guard" here in the US . That just appeals to me alot . Probably shouldn't go speak I a recruiter I suppose ?

Military would be a last choice. I myself wouldn't mind it at all, I like the idea. But everyone I know wouldn't let me go .

I did Allright in tech school. I should of singed up for Step. I don't think my grades were that good tho .

up to you- i'm just trying to make sure you know everything you can before you make the decision. *everybody* can be deployed. when i was pre-mobilizing in wisconsin i saw a coast guard crew on their way to the sandbox as well. figure that one out.

RI guard has C130J models and does rotations right now in Al Udied Qatar and in Baghram. So you might not want to be looking at them. But 2014 is the magical cut off date for the Afghanistan.

Then the no money for the military begins. It will be much like the Clinton years.

If you do three years in the service you will be eligible for the newest version of the GI Bill which offers Excellent benefits.

i have tenements that are in the coast guard. the husband has been in for 8 years and is an e6 or something like that. the wife did her three and got out a month ago. i think the possibility of getting deployed to the desert is really slim with this branch of service. mostly i think they take volunteers. you can get stationed in some cool places though.

No thank you very much , this is the kind of info I'm looking for , I want the truth, not what some recruiter is gonna try to sell me .

RI guard has C130J models and does rotations right now in Al Udied Qatar and in Baghram. So you might not want to be looking at them. But 2014 is the magical cut off date for the Afghanistan.

And this is even better info as well. So your saying skip the NG due to them rotating overseas. But enlist before 2014...which is soon . Maybe I could do coast guard...

I have no issue with serving my country , but my mom not being able to sleep at night while I'm overseas would bother me alot . If they didn't care, I probably would of enlisted awhile ago .

I'm trying to open up a new door for myself , I know the military takes good care of their veterans for the most part , when I was working on base I saw the benefits of being in the military and how well off alot of people were . I would love to work for the DOD again and I'm an idiot for letting that opportunity slip away . Newport Naval Station is literally A mile from my house .
