OBDII code reading & info

We have a 2001 Saab 9.3 convertible which again has it's cel on. Anyone know if the code can be read like our e30s or is a reader necessary? Which reader if necessary is best?

the actron scanner is a good scanner. the one for 149.00 show what the code is and I think reads out on the display what it actually means, like IAT sensor or O2 sensor and what not.

I have used that one and half the time the fragmented sentence that it reads out is not enough to even know what the code is. Not worth it in my opinion. Sometimes it reads out the code and "check manufacturer". The book that comes with it doesn't cover every code just the ones that are most used.

Just buy this one and google the code and you'll get all the info you need.

Yea, I've got the 9135, use it on a number of OBDII vehicles, never had a problem with it. You can find it for 100 bucks online most places. I've actually got a 25 page tiff document that cross references all of the ODBII fault codes with all of the official BMW fault codes & sensors as well.

120 bucks for the software, plus another 30 for a cable, plus a couple hundred for a cheapie laptop to throw in a car vs 100 bucks for a small peice of rugged plastic I can toss around into the trunk or workbench.

I don't see the upside.
