    Faulty HDD Recovery?

I thought it was a great idea to buy a 1TB Toshiba 3.5 SATA hard drive to store all my data and backups. It's partitioned into 2,
    1. Time machine 200GB
    2. OSX extra storage 600GB

Here's my issue, It wont do anything. I used a USB controller when it was hooked to my MBP and it's usually left in my Hackintosh.
Today I went to plug it into my MBP and it worked fine but now it's clicking and won't mount.

Hooked it up to my Hackintosh and it'll mount but after 30sec it's no longer doing anything.

I guess my question would be has anyone had this issue before and what did you do to fix it?

Also does anyone know a decent recovery service or option?

Thanks for any help in advance

So it is USB powered? Does it have one of those USB cables with 2 plugs? Could be a power issue...a lot of the time, a single port can't provide the required current to a mechanical HDD.

Ahh good question I forgot to add.

it's an internal HDD and is 12v powered. I used an external power supply to hook it up to my MBP

Hmm, so it works fine in your desktop machine for 30 seconds and then stops? In that case...not sure. How old is the drive?

        Oh, and obligatory:

          Exactly.
          It was manufactured May 2012

Seems highly unlikely that it is dead unless it got dropped or dumped into water, which I assume isn't the case.

I'd try hooking it up to a different computer and seeing what happens.

No drop or water. I thought the same.

Just hooked it up to another mac now i'm getting 10 seconds of use and then it stops.
It doesn't shut off or anything like that, it just freezes and is no longer accessible.

When you plug it in, put your ear close by and listen. Try to determine if the platter remains spinning, or if it just shuts off. Does it make a definitive click sound when the PC stops recognizing it?

                  Still spinning.
when I try to copy something or read from it I hear a buzz as if something is stuck and then normal chatter. Then another buzz. If I try it again I'll get normal chatter-freeze-buzz-and finally a click. it'll click at least three times before unmounting itself and then it magically re-appears

Sounds like the HDD click of death to me.

Tried again today, now the first partitions name has changed. But I didn't do it

Toshiba isnt exactly the brand to buy but you shouldnt be having issues yet, did you try plugging it into a desktop and using SATA cables?

That's what I was thinking. I know now though.

It's an internal SATA 3.5 drive. I've tried everything. I'm really just trying to figure out if what I have on here is worth $500 to recover.

Download a linux boot disk for one of there distros. Boot into and try to mount in Linux.

For some reason when Windows and OSx fail at reading or mounting a drive, linux can at least do it long enough for me to recover my data.
