Re: Mazda 3. My wife has a Mazda5 (manual) with about 90K. Bought it new. It's a bigger, heavier 3. Issues are:
    - TPMS (as previously noted). The replacements are holding up fine.
    - Rear shocks (just go aftermarket, no big deal)
    - Rapid brake wear. Again, just go aftermarket, like plain old parts store ceramic. No big deal.
    - Rear camber is not adjustable. You will eventually need aftermarket adjustable links to avoid massive tire wear. Around $150 plus installation or DIY.
    - Others have reported rapid bushing wear, but ours is OK so far.

    No engine problems
    No trans problems
No interior problems. Still tight and quiet.
Will get 28 mpg with conservative driving.
Overall, I'm satisfied, and more importantly, my wife is too.

That said, I recommend a Civic. A bit nicer in every respect, but might be outside your price range.

If it was your mother instead of GF, I'd say Corolla.

But seriously, thank you everyone for your suggestions. I think she is most likely going to head the Mazda 3 route. There quite a few low mile, one owner, clean ones in the KC area. I will report back once a car has been purchased.
