If you believe that the same posters feel the same way about historical figures from the aforementioned events. Then I stand corrected.

Thayendanegea, Geronimo, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Mandela. They all did terrible things for the freedom of their people. I guess in my mind the ends justify the means. I understand people can disagree.

Wow. Context people. If you are comparing drunk driving and speeding which kill people to a political movement that includes killing people ....

            Means to an end...

For racial equality it meant the lives of innocent people being lost. (Terrible)VS. a drunken speeding idiot killing someone (terrible)..what has his end result again??

Was the civil war worth the lives it took? Ww1, WW2?

I see your point, though to the victims it does not matter. Although I do believe there is a difference in what they accomplished.

Contrary to popular belief, the "L" in LSM3's username actually stands for Liberal.

I think you fail to see what my point is at all.

Yeah no kidding RIP to this guy, don't know 100% of what he did, sounds like he made some mistakes but I'll always remember him as a good person. And I also think he was truly an impressive guy living to 95 after living 27 years in prison, dude had balls.

The one thing that kind of upset me was the unequal coverage of his death on social-media sites to that of Paul Walker. Don't get me wrong, Paul Walker was a really cool guy too, I like JDM car culture, my E30 is a Japanese import and I know that scene wouldn't be where it is without him. And he was also good to do something positive with his fame/wealth through charity. But I never once saw an "RIP Nelson" tribute, only Paul Walker. I think that Mandela had a more profound impact on the world, but who am I to talk. It is also worth saying that my social media accounts are full of cars 24/7 so I probably had a bias to that too, but just writing my thoughts as they come.

All in all, another huge wish that Mandela, and Walker for that matter, rest in peace and that their families, friends, and all those that looked up to them will make it out okay.

^That's because you likely have a bunch of children posting to your newsfeed. Also, remembering him as "a good person" means you don't even pay respect to the likely hundreds that were tortured and killed under his order.

Hey, I'm not saying he was an excellent person, but I think his good contributions outweigh the bad. I acknowledged his faults, and I mean absolutely no disrespect to the the hundreds that were tortured. Sorry if it came across that way. I like to think, though, that the thousands upon thousands that had their qualities of life improved drastically by the move to an "equal" society (I know it wasn't equal but it was an improvement and a solid push in the right direction) was a good thing.

Lets move this jibber jabber to the political sub-forum.

Clogging up my OT time with threads about who is good and who is bad. Blah.

It certainly was not better under apartheid.

Mandela cannot be explained without nuance. He was a fighter, a politician, and a statesman. He excelled at all and, like most great leaders, had more than a few skeletons in his closet.
