Horrible news days before the holidays

We just learned during an all employee meeting that our plant "TRW" will be shutting it's doors Feb. 16, 2014 for good. Over 600 people in our plant alone will be jobless. The trickle effect will be massive and detrimental to the community.

My daughter and I had already had an appointment scheduled for her to enroll in a LPN (license practical nurse) school the day of the dreaded news. I end up enrolling myself in the class as well. My unemployment will cover a portion of the tuition, the rest will be paid out of pocket. Funny how life throws curve balls. I'm a 43 year old male machinist, who's about to become a male nurse. Go figure......




UPDATE 10/2/1015
I did it! It's official!!!! It was a long road with many hours of studying and countless clinical rotations but I accomplished a short term goal. I am now a nurse and continuing my education in the nursing field. Special thanks to my loving and understanding family that supported me through out this challenging struggle. Thanks for all the support and encouraging words from my fellow R3vlimited family.

That's no good man but I do greatly appreciate someone who sees where things are and is willing to jump into learning a new profession that is growing instead of remaining stagnant or shrinking.

Sorry to hear man. What a shitty time of the year to tell people they don't have a job anymore. Merry Christmas.....by the way you're getting laid off. Have you looked for other jobs as a machinist also, are you union? The machinist union is huge in Washington with Boeing being here. My Grandpa was union machinist for Boeing for like 30 years. Regardless don't let it ruin your holidays.

Yes we are a UAW plant. But I feel the time for change is best for me. The money is great and all but the future is dull. Detroit is in bankurutcy, the auto industry has not been the same since 2009. One thing is certain is that people will forever need medical assistance. The nursing field is very promising.

Best of luck in your future endeavors in nursing. My wife has been an RN for 18 years up here in the hat, but even that is changing here. They are presently downsizing the RN capacity to care aids and lpn's.

Not sure about down south, but up here ER nursing requires an RN designation and an ER specialty course.
Long way from an LPN education.

My wife is a home care palliative nurse, and she does around $90k per year, with 7 weeks vacation now.
It's a good gig if you can handle the emotional side. I personally couldn't.
