    XMBC does it work?

I refuse to pay crazy prices for cable so heard about this and thinking of trying it.

Has nothing to do with cable.
    It's just a media center front-end.

But you can stream tv shows without having to have cable basically correct?

Only from available addons. Depends on what is available, unless you subscribe to paid channels like Netflix or hulu or mgo. Mostly all that's available are Chinese shows and anime.

It also has youtube. Seems like a lot is available there, but not cable esque.

Something to consider with streaming, if you have a bandwidth cap on your internet, even if the streaming is free, you might end up paying a lot if you exceed your limit. Had that happen after watching a bunch of stuff with Amazon Prime. Went over by 20gb or so and my bill was almost double.

I forgot all about those horrid bandwidth caps. Luckily, I am unaffected by that craziness. I have over 100GB download and over 200GB upload so far this month alone and I barely use netflix.

Yeah, my cap is 125GB a month combined up and down. What's the point of having a smart TV if I can't even use it?

you can use XBMC to download torrents automatically to your hard drive. Not exactly a "legal" route but it's available.
