I think it might help listing what you majored in, for example liberal arts being a major difficult to find a job.

Depends on the city you are in. I graduated with a manufacturing degree in my home town. Around here there is little to no manufacturing jobs as the town is a tourist town. A few hours away in a larger city however, there are literally 30x the number of jobs there are here, and not because there is 30x the population (which there isn't).

this is exactly why i havent gone yet i have seen a lot of people go to school and still live at home with their parents and work lame ass jobs they hate, the ones i know who do make money are in fields they didnt even go to school for! example biology=fabrication so i figure might as well be mostly debt free and be happy where im at.

this is a far fetched hope but it seems college will be changing drastically in the next 10yrs or so due to a lot of the new online schools so im probably gonna see how it is in a few years and try it out.

5 years of college to get a marketing degree. I changed majors and schools, so really only 4 years applied.
9 years total in industrial sales.

It's taken a while to get to where a I'm now. The old timers are correct when the mumble about kids getting out of college with high expectations. They and I can say that, you don't make much more than someone without a degree fresh on the market.
What you now have going for you is a pass to the employment line that will have a path. I don't want to sound harsh, but anyone....anyone can go to college now. Hence the reason so many are people are going for their masters. It's crazy in the job market.
OP, are you in college now?

4 years to graduate with a major in european studies, took about 8 months before I became a claims adjuster...been doing that for a year and am making mid-40ks..I'll keep at it until I hopefully find something more...fun.

Its important to find a job that you like but also in this economy you have to find a major that will provide you with a job that's in demand. For example so many of my friends graduated with teaching degrees, many are struggling to find a job because there are so many teachers. Engineering, best decision of my life.

I went to Tech school when i got out of High school. I was a BMX rider, and my mom told me to go become a Mechanic because they make ALOT of money. well i go to UTI not knowing a damn thing about a car. I graudaute and ive had a hard time keeping a Job.I tell them going into the job, my skillset is that of BMW and they get upset when i tell them ive been doing this for only 5 years. They tell me
"WELL ISNT UTI THE BEST OF THE BEST?"

So all i ever get is LOF shit, and maybe a brake job here and there.
Then when i tell them i want to do more,i get told no we have someone else for that. So i get bored and i end up quitting.

I got fired for the first time ever earlyer this month, because i wouldnt sign something.

My dream job was to work for the railroad, ever since i was a kid.
that job has always been who you know and bamn your in.

well now some MBA in Nebraska goes threw all the applications, and IF your lucky you will get a interview, and that doesnt even mean your offered the job. You get three interviews and then you pass a Drug test.
they like to hire millitary people, because Railroad hours suck, and i cant go to the military because i have health issues that wont allow it.
The most ive made as a tech is $12,and that was three years ago,I cant find anyplace that comes near that now.

So now im trying to get a job where i can make just something to survive.
get a taste not asking for a lot, just sumthing. Id like have a Newer daily,I cant daily my M535i for ever.

                    uti: urinary tract infection.

exodus2pto has a career in working on trains. if that is what you want to do, why don't you pm him? he seems like a great guy and i bet he would be willing to help. i really think you need to look at the positives in your life or at least put it into perspective by thinking about others that have life so much worse than you do. paraplegic bums freezing their asses off on the street trying to score some prescription narcotics for example.....

when you interview somewhere, you need to be upbeat and confident. no one will want to hire a guy who is a complete debbie downer. this kinda goes along the whole Holland thing with being able to get women.

for me, i had set my career goals without having even the slightest idea of how to attain them. however, every time i had the chance to make a decision about my life path, i always chose the one that put me closer to my goal.

i have a degree in aviation science which i have to say in retrospect is just one step above worthless to me. my entire life-since i was 3 feet tall-i always wanted to fly airplanes. there was never anyone in my life to mentor me into the right direction nor was there the internet to do research at that time. i stumbled upon the degree choice by listening to a college recruiter because i wanted to get my ass out of literature class.

airlines want their pilots to have a batchelor's degree but they could care less if it is in underwater buttfucking. i could have saved tons of money and time by choosing a different route to my goal. oh well, i am really happy now and i love my job. i guess that is all that really matters.

Do you still live with your perants? If so a great way to get into your dream job is ask if you can do some work experiance there. Say for 1 or 2 weeks, in that time smash it do what every they say no matter how BS it is, ask all the questions you can think of.

That is the best way to get into a job that requires you to know someone, if you are lucky you will make friends with someone and bam you have a job.

                      Just my experiance anyways

I can't side with you guys more, here's my situation. I went to school for 3 years and never got my degree, I'm now 24. I got a job as a drafter about a year and half ago because i told them I went to school for engineering and took some drafting courses. I did mention that I didn't have a degree to them. By some miracle chance I still got the job. So now a year and a half later I'm at about $40k a year and up for a promotion up to $60k salary as a junior project supervisor. All I did was just bring everything I had to the table as far as my personal skills (time management, project supervision, thinking outside the box, etc etc.) I'm going to school now part time for business that way I can have more doors open for me within the company, but that opportunity is only there because I'm already employed by them and they know my skills and work ethic. I hate to say it but hard work is the only thing that really pays off unless you're the 1% of Americans who've had everything handed to them from birth.
A degree really just lets you get in the door, it doesn't guarantee anything.

Agree, we can't find enough good engineers even in Michigan where life is allegedly so shitty. I know this will come off shitty but I feel completely insulated from this type of stuff. Almost everyone I hang out with (myself included) has at least one master's degree or went to law school, many are engineers but some are like master's of communication and shit and they all still have good jobs. Primary to me is picking a field that you can get a job in, if you have to get loans (I have like 20-25k left to pay) don't get them in excess of what you will be able to pay back in your field. If you will have to move to get a job but aren't willing to move don't go into that field. Lastly work your ass off to get ahead and you will.

i second this. no degree and i have a great career. although i'm still working on my degree.

own your job, always be positive, act like you want to be there, leave your personal life at home, never be short with employees/customers.
