I believe that on modern day cars the fuel injectors are shut off when coasting in gear, but when in neutral/idling the injectors are still firing. when it's in gear the engine is connected to the wheels via the transmission and driveline. As long as you are rolling forward the engine will continue to spin with or without fuel or air because the momentum is enough to sustain amirite?
In a modern fuel injected car, when you close the throttle the fuel injectors also close. So it doesn't use fuel 100% of the time... For example if you have a BMW, Just look at its mileage meter. Coast down a hill and watch the meter. It will go all the way to the highest MPG on the meter while you're coasting. This is because the injectors have been shut off and the engine is using no fuel.
Somebody agree with me. I asked 3 other people and they all agree, yet 2-3 others disagree.
