    overclocking?

Well I finally took the plunge with my Phenom II 975 x4.

It was running at 65*C under load with prime95 with the stock cooler. So I installed a corsair h100i and managed to run it stable at 4.2ghz with 1.45V. I was 15 minutes into a load test when the rig just shut down. No blue screen, just off.

After about 10 minutes I fired it back up, and a fucking MOSFET caught on fire!

Never using another MSI mobo. Strangest part is that it will still boot up, but I'm not risking it. Asus mobo will be here tomorrow, and I'm using this as an excuse to upgrade to 8.1.

So yes, it doesn't matter if its a car or computer. You boost it and shit will blow up eventually.

That said, I'm still going to over clock it... Just hoping the asus is up to the challenge.

I have the same processor. Which MSi mainboard were you running? I've been running a 870a-g54 for over 3 years now. My 975 has been stable at 4ghz, can't clock it past that because I can't increase the voltage for some reason.

What do you need 4.2ghz for brahhh. GFX cards are the bottlenecks in most of today's systems.

I'm running a gtx 660 and saw a 10fps increase in bf4 from the extra 600mhz and better cooling. That was on top of raising the graphics settings from high to ultra.

This is my gaming rig, and many games are relying on CPU power more and more.

Intersting. Sold my PC to help purchase my e30. Not a bad deal, but I haven't been involved in the computer nerd stuff for like two years now. How time flies..

I thought the same because it had voltage grayed out. But shift and + on my keypad increased it.

              Board was a 760GM-P35.

Picture of burn. I had to blow it out like a candle.

              Replacement is an ASUS M5A97

Have you try to build a water cool system and a case that you need dry ice just to see how much boost you can get before it explodes. The good old days of widows 95. Wondering how I ended up a weekend grease monkey.

Back in the day my friend and I overclocked my Pentium 4 to 18 GHz.

Needless to say it didn't POST. We had to clear the CMOS before figuring out how the multiplier actually worked.

The AMD black edition processors look cool. I was looking at Phenom II Mobile X620 3.1Ghz for my laptop but I backed out when I found out HP locks down consumer books BIOS so I woulldn't be able to advantage of any overclocking

I got an amd a10 5800k on a MSI mobo. I ran it to 4.4ghz stable with an h80i. Under stress testing I don't even get past 17c. I backed it down to 4.2ghz and its perfect. Idles around 3c & I can game all day without my pc acting as a space heater. This is with the h80 on quiet setting. Those fans can get really loud.

I've even pushed it to 4.6ghz without any issues, so I'm amazed that one of your mosfets popped. As you really wasn't pushing the voltage.

how are the APUs for gaming? i was thinking of getting one for my wife to play some games with but i dont want to build her something shitty. i dont feel like shelling out $800+ to build something she is just gonna use as a console (she wants to be able to get mods for skyrim and the like)

Could handle those games on low settings fine. OC and some good ram is all it really needs to get the most out of the APU. If you want more performance obviously you need a GPU, but for a budget rig it performs fine. Upside is quad core & overclocking since the only comparable intel is the dual core i3 3220. Haven't done any research on the newer line of amd apus, but from what I know the difference in performance is negligible for price/performance.

gotcha so the APUs are still meh then...crap i was hoping i could get that and make a small console clone, my other idea is to get a lower amd 4core or splurge for an i5 since they run cooler, a 560ti since they are really small and build my own small case from a gutted old case i have and some wood and stain it and use brass hinges.

or i could just finish my fucking engine and stop buying guitar and computer shit :pimp:
