This shouldn't need to be explained.

This dude owns a team. The team is part of a league. The league, as a whole, is part of widely publicized entertainment industry. When this dude does something to threaten the public image (and thus profitability) of the NBA, the NBA is within its rights to force him to exit the league. It is a means of saving face and protecting their profitability.

There is a contract. He signed it. There will be a voting process. If he's out, he's out. They aren't depriving him of his livelihood, but rather telling him to get the team out on the market.

It's all legal and hardly 'un-American'. It is to remove his antiquated views from the business practices of a modern entertainment enterprise.

My 2c... one, if you're a racist old dude, don't fuck young, money-grabbing socialites and expect your 'private conversations' to remain private. Two, a lot of people here need to understand that 'freedom of speech' does not equal 'freedom from the consequences of speaking'.

I don't understand why everybody is up in arms about this.
1)He's a racist shit head. This isn't new info.

2)His legal rights were violated ONLY if the recordings are used against him in a court of law. Although I believe my home state is fairly hard on people that record convos where one party is unaware they're being recorded

3)The NBA has cause to vote him out due to his statements being something that can harm the NBA business as a whole.

4)He is the longest tenured owner in the league, he knows the fucking bylaws. He helped write them because he's a goddamn lawyer by trade.

5)Wah wah wah, "its un-American!" Again, this is NOT a stupid man, he KNEW what he signed up for 30 years ago.

6)The NBA is at fault for not forcing him out sooner. They didn't, and now they're being draconian to sweep away that fact.

        7) The NBA is a better league without him.

        8) This is more about the new commish showing he's no pushover and getting rid of an owner that NOBODY in the league liked than it is about race.

The problem here is that there's a real misunderstanding between the obligations of the state--wiretapping laws as they relate to prosecution, due process in the judicial system, and enforcement of private property laws.

The state is not involved in an owners' association when it comes to its constitution (i.e. a contract, and notice, it is not The Constitution). Therefore, all of the protective laws that prevent the state from overstepping its bounds and persecuting its citizens DO NOT APPLY to private business associations.

Isn't that what many conservatives want? A hands-off approach to regulation, and to allow businesses to self-regulate? The NBA made their stance clear. The ownership association will self-regulate. If it appears the image of the NBA is tarnished to the point of reduced revenues, they will boot Sterling. If not, they may not.

It's funny watching Democrats lash out at success and Republicans lash out at lazy.

No, I just wish I were one of those lucky black folk to whom he so selflessly and graciously provides a living.

Well, he has opened his mouth.

L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling has reportedly made his first public comments on the controversy he’s found himself engulfed in, telling DuJour Magazine “I wish I had just paid her off.”

Sterling also told the magazine that he is currently limiting himself to doing interviews with the NBA and Barbara Walters.

Sterling was presumably referring to V. Stiviano, the woman reportedly on the receiving end of his racist tirade. Sterling has indicated this week that he would put up a fight if the other NBA owners force him to sell the Clippers.

Now, this to me sounds like he realizes he SHOULD have paid her off, which, to me makes sense that she likely told him she was going to release the recording, and he decided he wasn't gonna get blackmailed.

But, he kind of ironically did.

So, it makes her look even worse, that she asked for a payoff to keep quite, sounds like a money-grubbing floozie to me.

OF COURSE SHE IS. She's attractive from the neck down, and 31 years old. You think she wasn't looking for a fucking payday? Lol

I know, I wasn't debating it, I was reaffirming it. See my post from Page One?

While Sterling's comments may have been taken out of context, and while racists are very disturbing, I would rather know the truth about an individual's mindset rather than the PC-filtered version. Closet racists are scarier than the vocal ones.

It would really suck to break bread with someone at the office regularly, only to find out that he or she is someone other than I thought.
