I personally think Nirvana is one of the most overrated bands of all time; but I still listen to their music, and still respect what they did, mostly because one of my friend's death is remembered through their music.

I kind of agree with Jeremy. I think Kurt's suicide launched Nirvana to heights they wouldn't have seen had they been able to slowly fade away like other bands normally do.

THAT BEING SAID, I love Nirvana and I think music as we know it today would be a lot different were it not for them.

I wouldn't have minded if he took Courtney down with hikm though :drink:

Anybody hear they are coming out with an action figure of Cobain? Cashing in on his death.

Gonna have to disagree. Nirvana was HUGE before Cobain's death, it ushered in a completely different style of rock to the mainstream. The seattle grunge sound took over in less than 6 weeks from hair metal which had been going strong for 8+ years. I think this is an age thing.

Charlie is right. For years we were stuck with all the big hair, makeup, and screaming voices of the metal bands. You also have MC Hammer and Bobby Brown dancing around in gaudy baggy outfits. Then out of nowhere, around '91-92, you start hearing a few songs that are just 'different'-but not in a bad way. I still remember the first time I listened to Nirvana and Pearl Jam-both of these bands basically hit the airwaves about the same time and as soon as it did, the world of grunge and alternative music completely took over.

It was honestly a revelation-I think most of us were dying to hear a new type of music, but we just didn't know it. For me personally, it actually affected my life and I will always consider it my favorite style of music. You will hardly find any new music in my collection, but look in my CD case and you can relive the history of alternative music.

One more alternative music singer's death that I think should be mentioned is Shannon Hoon, who was the lead singer of Blind Melon (yeah, the bee girl video). I think most people remember their first album just for the bee girl video, but that entire album was excellent. This was another band that you can say, 'What could have been....'

              Thanks Kurt and Shannon. RIP.

I thought about going into a rant on the current music of today, but for the most part the shit they call 'music' these days is not even worth commenting on.

Amen on Hoon man, I really miss him. I've still got 2 of their albums out in my car.

VH1 classic has actually had "Tones of home" on rotation quite a bit lately, I'm surprised. Most people have never heard anything other than "no rain". It still cracks me up to see him in GNR's video for Don't Cry.

I never said that they didn't have a huge impact on music, because they did. I am just saying that Nirvana never got a chance to fade out of popularity and existence like most bands do. They were immortalized in the peak of their popularity with Kurt's death.

Much like the Doors, Sex Pistols, Sublime, Beatles (yes, I said that) and such. As Neal said, it's better to burn out, than to fade away.

this is really going to make me old, but I remember when Nirvana was an underground local band from Aberdeen who's EP a friend gave me. Very odd watching them come from a small town- do the club scene- to blowing up almost over night (I say almost because they did pay their dues playing clubs just like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam did) but it seems once teen spirit hit MTV/Radio, all you heard about was Nirvana and the "New Grunge" music.

I got to see them live! At the Agrodome in Vancouver. Great show.

Me and a few friends were planning to be in the Seattle area the weekend after he killed himself. Then when we found out he did, it was pretty creepy. We went down to the space needle, and there were a few people milling around. The folks there looked like they were lost.

Nirvana is still one of my favourite bands. One of the radio stations here was doing a Nirvana tribute today, and the songs sound fresh, like they could have been released this year.
