Roadtrip from Michigan internationa speedway to SoCal

Well, it's that time of year again. I'll be taking the E30 across the country home with me from Troy, NY to SoCal. This time, I'll be taking a stop at Michigan International Speedway to go to competition with my school's FSAE team.
My plans are to leave Michigan on the 18th, get to Des Moines that night, then Denver on the 19th, then St. George on the 20th, then finally to arrive back home in SoCal on the 21st.

What kind of sight seeing do you all recommend? I've driven the route before (with slightly different stops) but I know there's things to see that I don't really know about. Also if anyone wants to meetup and show an out-of-towner some good backroads or something, that would be a great time!

I know, but to see anything interesting in that region would be a seemingly large detour.

I have some friends in CO that I might visit, but other than that, I'm just trying to make decent to time so I can start work on the 22nd

yes there is much more to see if you take that I90 route. Or being that your an automotive enthusiast. From MIS, you will be a 4 1/2 hour drive form Down town Chi Town and the northern terminus of the Mother Road aka ROUTE 66. There is also the Henry ford Museum in Dearborn on the west side of detroit, that if you rush will take you a day or so...

You can take US12W all the way to Niles MI where it will tie into I94, but this is a 3 hour journey in it self due to all the small towns and traffic. I would run west on US12 from MIS to US127N up to I94W to get to Chicago. You could take M50 which runs just north of MIS back into Napoleon then take the back roads up wolf lake road to Grass Lake MI go back east though town to Mt Hope road and that will get you back to I94W as well. To get to the Museum, hang a left on to US12 from MIS and after about an hour or so it should take you right too it. Once you get though Inkster and about 3mi east of Telegraph rd. I lived about 30 miles west and latter about the same north of MIS for a combined 27 years ;)

You could turn this into a great opportunity to take the road less traveled

this is prolly one of the best web pages devoted to the "Old road"

ugh making me want to go lol.... my team will be up there. Was going to go, but its the first week of summer classes and I just booked a flight to DR for next weekend. It kinda sucks too because we are all seniors and this will be the last team that we are all together.

Good luck at FSAE comp, and prepare to have your mind blown with all the insane engineering there. The European teams (Tu Graz in particular) are rediculous.

Yeah We're a pretty scrappy, ragtag bunch compared to some of the bigger outfits out there. But we're hoping to get some good results. Our engine dev is pretty advanced and we're running a pretty effective aero kit this year so fingers crossed!
