I know there is others on here that enjoy making items with metal and the dying art of taking a hammer to a chunk of metal on an anvil. I attended some classes with I was in my teens, I have been getting back into it lately.

Some might have seen my hammered copper belt buckles, made from a solid chunk of copper stock:





New things I am making now:
I always love wearing rings, but my hands/fingers are huge...so how about I just make them? haha

Hammered brass with a soldered connection, ground, beveled and polished.

Very cool. A guy who lives down the road from me has a little blacksmith shop in his garage and I see him in there once in a while working on things. I'll have to stop in sometime and check it out.

My SO is a jewelry designer/metalworker who does production for a rather successful designer (Alexis Russell), and is just starting to set up a shop for her own designs. For both her employer and her personal sales, hammered brass/bronze/copper are among the biggest sellers. There is a reason the stores that sell perfectly smooth shiny silver/gold jewelry are always in strip malls and shopping centers. It is all mass produced, cold, and boring, just like everything else sold in those areas. These traditional techniques are time consuming to make, take a huge amount of practice and honed skill to produce, and offer a unique look and feel, as well as character that you just don't get with mass produced jewelry.

well, i like it.

brandon, if you want to achieve more control over the "hammered" look, here is what i suggest:

first, you will need some sort of fixture for holding the ring tight from the inside so you don't deform the circle when you hit it.

second, i would go to harbor freight and buy a set of drift punches. chuck one of them in a 1/2" drill and run the business end on a whet stone to round it off. then graduate to finer grits of sand paper until you get a nice polish on the rounded end. finish with something around 1200.

use the punch to dent the metal by hitting it with a hammer while it is fixed in your holding mechanism/vise.

i had an uncle that used to make hammered silver jewelry back in the late 70's/early 80's until he died. this is how he did it. he had different diameter punches depending on the size dent he wanted to strike into the metal

I saw that too a few months ago, it could be done using some sheets of brass or copper. It sure as heck would save a ton of time on the anvil ;D
