Damn, under fifteen thousand for a brand new VW? Am i reading that right? And if the base gets the 2.5, that means it's an inline 5 cyl. Weird.
"Having won more road races than any other model in history, the E30 M3 is considered by many to be the world's most successful road race car." - Simply put, E30s kick ass.
I like how they advertise where the motor "came from", but 150hp from a 2.5L twincam is fucking pathetic. No excuse.
My 1990 Audi's 2.3L 5-cylinder makes 14 more horsepower.
Considering the MK4 golf/jetta recieved a 2.0 115hp I4 I think there's little to complain about in that department, I'll take a 150HP 170 LB-Ft of torque 5 cyl anyday over the 2.0 lump.

I agree that it is pathetic, but the GTI makes 200 hp. They couldn't have the base model that close in hp to the GTI. Now the smart thing would be to have the GTI make more power, but we can only wish.
Good point... No reason to buy the GTI if you can get the same engine in a stripped down base model. I want to see the torque numbers on the 5cyl. Vw usually makes up for its lack of hp, in the torque dept. We'll see I guess, I'm a bit skeptical myself. They don't have much to lose by trying it (other than some profits).
The GTI is one of newer 3 cars I'm considering for a daily, but I'll probably end up buying a slightly used Mini S. Although the GTI look pretty good, and at 3200 lbs, isn't that heavy.
So quality has gone down the shitter the past few years, prices have gone up, and the market they carved out 25-30 years ago has disappeared.
To fix all this, VW is going to bring back an old nameplate.
That's GM-level genius right there.

Heres how it works Charles,
Even if quality goes up, they still need to get people to the dealership to check out the new "rabbit". If they like what they see they buy, and given that prices are going to come down in conjunction, this seems like a decent ploy. By bringing back the rabbit name it evokes memories of a solid, affordable car. I dont know if it will ever match 225,000 units per year, but it cant hurt.
