Tim: Well, that's no ordinary rabbit.
            King Arthur: Ohh.
Tim: That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on!
Sir Robin: You tit! I soiled my armor I was so scared!
Tim: Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer!

Are the Mk5's that are on the streets already still called Golfs? When are they making the transfer?

i dont think they understand. the name isn't why people don't buy Golfs, its the price.

they're decent cars for most of the people out there looking for a little practical hatch, but they're so damn expensive its no wonder the japanese kick ass in that segment.

And when the birkenstock-wearing trust-fund hippies want another new car, Lezbaru is the choice here, in hippie mecca. VW, like, sold out to "the man", see...unlike fuji heavy industries, right?

The Mk5 "golf" isn't out yet, the GTI and Jetta are. Charlie is obviously a little short in the VW knowledge department so I'll break it down for people. The Fast has nothing to do with the Rabbit.

VW Golfs were always called Golfs in every other country from MK1 to Mk5. In the US we got the special name for the Golf MK1 as the Rabbit. Later was dropped on the MK2-4. The opposite was true for the Jetta as it's a much better seller here then other countries, VW kept the Jetta name plate for MK1-Mk5, but overseas, you had the Vento and Bora. Long story short, the GTI has always been the GTI in every country. This is the "performance" Golf, but now if you look at your registration, it's actually the VW Model name: GTI vs. a variation or trim level such as Golf GL...

So what VW is doing is bringing back the Rabbit name for the Golf (GTI is not effected) to remind people that the affordable VW is back ($14.9k). Sales have been sucking lately and they applied the same design philosophy to the GTI, get it back to it's roots for lighter weight, and more performance. Big improvement over the last MK4 GTI. VW is also talking about adjusting the base Jetta price down to be more in line with the Rabbit/Golf. I think it's a smart move on VWs part to try and get their market share back. Lately they have been way overpriced and you can get cheaper and more reliable cars from Korea.

Look closely at the Fast - it is a Rabbit.

Cramer, good insight, thanks for the info. I'm glad to see V-Dub bringing prices back in line with the reason they got popular - practical, decently-built cars that are affordable.

you obviously don't pay attention to the ads ;) The GTi is a performance version of the Golf/Rabbit.. so the Rabbit is turned into the "Fast"... but the Fast has nothing to do with the Rabbit car. Hell it's all marketing, the Fast is for performance and the GTI, the Rabbit is for affordable, german engineered car.

So quality has gone down the shitter the past few years, prices have gone up, and the market they carved out 25-30 years ago has disappeared.

To fix all this, VW is going to bring back an old nameplate.

                            That's GM-level genius right there.

while I'll agree with you, name changing or bring in a euro model to boost sales is very GM like, however you're missing the key factor. Along with the Rabbit name, comes the lower price, $14,990. CNN as usual has an incomplete story....

it's a smart move on VW's part.. and unlike GM ;)
