I watched the qualifying at San Marino this morning and M. Scheuy wrote another page in the F1 history books. He has taken pole position for the 66th time....breaking the record of 65 set by the late Ayrton Senna. Ironically, MS's latest record was set at the very track that took Senna's life some 12 years ago. Kind of bittersweet in a way. I should also note that tomorrow's race will be aired on CBS instead of SpeedTV. Coverage starts at 10am. Personally, I am not too crazy about this since the CBS commentators drive me nuts....but that's just me. Thankfully, Speed will be airing this race with Speed commentators Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, and Steve Matchett next Saturday....not sure what time though.
Now for the qualifying results. Some surprises this time....
1. M.Schumacher - Ferrari
2. J. Button - Honda
3. R. Barrchello - Honda
4. F. Massa - Ferrari
5. F. Alonso - Renault
6. R. Schumacher - Toyota
7. J.P. Montoya - McLaren/Mercedes
8. K. Raikkonen - McLaren/Mercedes
9. J. Trulli - Toyota
10. M. Webber - Williams/Cosworth
11. G. Fisichella - Renault
12. J. Villeneuve - Sauber/BMW
13. N. Rosberg - Williams/Cosworth
14. D. Coulthard - RBR/Ferrari
15. N. Heidfeld - Sauber/BMW
16. V. Liuzzi - STR/Cosworth
17. C. Klien - RBR/Ferrari
18. S. Speed - STR/Cosworth
19. T. Monteiro - MF1/Toyota
20. C. Albers - MF1/Toyota
21. T. Sato - Super Aguri/Honda
22. Y. Ide - Super Aguri/Honda
This is Ferrari's home race and they have really stepped up their game. For those who recall last years' San Marino GP, Fernando Alonso held off M. Schuey in convincing fashion during the last 10 laps and that victory set the tone for Renault's entire 2005 season. Thanks to all the new rules for 2006, this years' race should be equally entertaining.
