    Nothing yet
Part of the core of the city right downtown is locked up still. If you live in a certain area you can't leave your house. If you were at work and need to get home tough. Find elsewhere.

Parliament lock down was lifted briefly but was recently reinstated.

It's not known how many shooters or assailants there where yet.

Our Prime Minister Harper just announced were not am immune to these attacks etc etc, offered no detail.

Not even sure if my office is open tomorrow...just glad to be safe with my family now.

Sadly the 24 year old soldier that guards the "unknown soldier" war monument in front of Parliament succumbed to the 4 gunshots he received.

What we had here in Ottawa today was yet another armed nutbar (or nutbars, there may be one or more still out there, but I doubt it) on Parliament Hill, which is sort of like the Capitol, but more parliamentary and kind of hilly. Every decade or so some nutbar will attack Parliament Hill. There was a guy in the 90s who tried to drive a tour bus up the steps under the Peace Tower but didn't make it. Everybody knows that for steps you need an E30, and downwards is better.
Whether today's nutbar was a Jihadist nutbar or just another nutbar; go about your business. It's become a tired meme, but "Keep Calm, Carry On."
What today was *not* was "Canada's 9/11." On 9/11 over 4,000 people died, buildings came down. 9/11 was the western world's 9/11, even after 80 people were killed on the London Underground.

As for killing an honour guard at the War Memorial? If nutbar was a Jihadist, that's another good reason to hunt down the SOBs. 6 RCAF CF-18s left for Iraq today and I wish them good hunting.

Nah, nah, nah... The Ex-marine gunned down the police that showed up at his door, and then fled from his house. This lead to a man-hunt for him throughout the day while I was at work. They locked down all the schools in the 118 district (he hid near the grade school), and required parents to come and get their kids one by one. Never found out if they caught the guy or what happened... The weirdest thing is that it's not on the news, and I can't find any info on the inter-webs?!?!? I would have just posted a link if I could find a story posted by a legit source.

Interesting to check back and see how this played out... They can't be seriously trying to say this was "Canada's 9/11"? I didn't even bother to look at the media's regurgitation of this, but that statement is just silly. This happens in the suburbs of Chicago, and doesn't even make the local news, but this happens in Canada, and it's the next 9/11? Either way, I'm glad to hear that they let you go, and you are not stuck away from home.

I'm not sure where this phrase was coined, as it most certainly does not earn the title. It is however not just another murder. That it was a soldier at probably the most important memorial in the country is pretty big.

According to the media, there is an ISIS connection with the shooter.

Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, the slain gunman in Wednesday’s shooting at the Ottawa War Memorial and Parliament Buildings, had a criminal record in Quebec and British Columbia.

I'll be honest, I'm a skeptical person and just assumed this was, as SubDad put it, 'another nutbar'. Being an ISIS connectoin genuinely has me worried for my country. We're a very multi-cultural and supportive nation who believe in freedom and equality. I can't imagine why anyone would want to hurt us, especially our own.

Maybe he liked his cars hellaflush and was sick of the tyrannical reign of highway patrol.

It's good to know we (Americans) aren't the only hated ones. Sorry for your losses.

Glad you made it thru okay OP.

why? that's exactly what Daesh wants. The best they could do is kill 1 unarmed soldier and scare the shit out of a lot of people.

the police are confident it was just the act of the one guy.
                            Isis affiliation still undetermined.

I went for a little walk this morning while I got my coffee to see if parliamentary area was accessible. No dice. The street are bare. And there's a police presence. Here's a picture

I walked by the USA embassy which is a block west of my office and the Americans still have armed security presence standing outside.
They don't f'k around. I did not take a picture lol
