    Subaru transmission help

    I posted on Nasioc to see if anyone knows, I do know we have a good bit of Subaru gurus on here, any help for gearing ratios that will work would be a big help.

    I bought a 96 Outback Legacy for a winter car and it has a bad Automatic transmission**popped the pan off and tons of broken metal came out**

    Transmission I have is: TZ102Z2ABA

    I found a handful of transmissions in the junk yard and looked at the coding from a site someone posted about a Gen 2:

    Here is what I can get for my car in the local junkyard(starting with most matching):

    TZ102Z2DBA

    TZ102ZA3BA

    TZ102ZA5AA

    Pretty sure I answered my own questions

    So I put all the numbers side by side and entered them into the code, I was confused by the last 3 letters/numbers.

    Looks like since this is a Gen 2 list break down, the only thing that REALLY matters to me is the first 6 digits:

    I entered my coding down the list till B = Correlating engine classification Since this is a chart for a Gen 2 that would mean that would be different vs mine? All the important numbers match for gearing etc

    example code = t z 1 0 2 z 2 d b a
    t z 1 0 2 z 2 a b a

    Breakdown:
    T = Transmission symbol
    (T - Transmission)

    Z = Transmission associated classification
    (A - 2WD AT)
    (M - 2WD MT)
    (Y - 4WD AT)
    (Z - 4WD AT)

    10 = Transmission type series classification
    (75 - MT [75mm])
    (10 - AT [108mm])

    2 = Car body series
    (2 - Legacy series)

    Z = Standard transmission spec classification
    (A - 2WD AT [TA102])
    (R - 2WD MT [TM752])
    (V - ViS-C center diff 4WD [TY752])
    (Y - VTD MP-T center diff 4WD 4AT [TZ102])
    (Z - MP-T center diff 4WD 4AT [TZ102])
    (X - ViS-C center diff 4WD D/R [TY752])

    B = Correlating engine classification
    (B - 2.0L DOHC MPi turbo)
    (D - 2.0L DOHC MPi NA)
    (S - 2.0L SOHC MPi NA)
    (W - 1.8L SOHC MPi NA)
    (1 - 2.5L DOHC MPi NA)

    C = Yearly improvment/design change classification
    (Starts with 'A' and subsequently 'B', 'C', etc.)

    A = Shows change in specification in transmission body
    ('A', 'B', 'C', etc.)

    A = Doesn't change based on vehicle engine or body

      A 4eat is pretty much the same the later ones had spin on filters the outbacks had 4.44 gearing so you will want one with the same gearing i used to have a svx and put a outback 4eat and changed the rear diff to match

        there was a '96 legacy outback with a manual trans car in the local pick a part. when i was there yesterday, someone had pulled the trans and engine out of the car to take the clutch disk and pressure plate. the rest was sitting in front of the car. i suppose that would solve your problems.

          Hey another Subaru owner! Mine is my winter beater as well, '97 Legacy L manual. I don't have much info to offer since I'm relatively new to Subies, but I can suggest USMB as a resource. I've used the forum since I got mine & it's content and members have been helpful thus far; Ultimate Subaru

            Thanks for the heads up on the forum, I just joined. I'm a recent subaru owner myself so I'm still feeling it out. I purchased a 2000 Outback Limited Wagon for the winter. 182,000 miles but completely rust free.

              I work parts at a Subaru dealership part time, I may be able to help you out on Saturday. I can probably at least tell you the gear ratios.
              For all things 24v, check out Markert Motorworks!

                Thanks, Roy check the ratios between the transmission I have right now and the first replacement code in that list. I can get the diff if I want to match ratios, I am pretty sure they should be roughly the same.
