    Paint and Primer for Garage

I am about done taping and mudding the garage walls and will prime/paint soon. Any suggestions for the type of paint? I want them easy to clean and as tough as possible. Also, any thoughts on PVA drywall primer versus regular primer for new drywall?

Did the walls in my garage in Kelly Moore Durapoxy . Satin finish. The satin finish is in between a Matte and Gloss finish. It is durable , but any paint that you smack the edge of a 2x4 into will scrape or mar it.

Durapoxy is the top of the line paint from Kelly Moore and its what professional painters use for their top tier clients. Its all I use!
I have an "in" with Kelly Moore and can by at contractor cost so if you want to go this route I can hook you up.

You pick color and quantity and then we can make it happen! Oh with DuraPoxy you do not need a primer as the base coat. It has excellent coverage and it is better to roll with DuraPoxy as the primer and then use a second coat as it bonds to itself better than primer as a base coat.

Good to know. I have ~580 ft^2 of new drywall/mudd to cover in the garage, and I am thinking 2-3 coats. How many gallons do you think would be needed? Satin finish is a good idea since I did a level 4 mudding job (sort of overkill for a garage, but it was good practice for me since I will do some interior remodeling in my house at some point).

Is this a 2-part paint that I need to mix a hardener into before applying? What sort of price would I be looking at for a 5 gallon pail?

Coverage of one gallon is 250-350 Sq Feet.

This does not need a hardner. Its already premixed and ready to roll / brush.

Here is the link to the Suggested Paint

        http://kellymoore.com/products/product-lines/1687

        188.32 + Tax for a 5 Gallon Bucket.

There is limited availabilty on color selection as this is all the Painting Contractors that know their stuff use. So you would need to pick a color from their selection and I could contact again and make sure its available (they source it from other local stores -Kelly Moore)

        Use this page http://kellymoore.com/mycolorstudio-color-palette/

For the My Color Studio app or just visit a store and browse their color chips.

There is also porch and floor durapoxy for garage floors and such.

BTW, I did my garage using an industrial style mud gun and did not "knock -down" as I tend to like the big texture right from the gun and Durapoxy covered great. I found that as the temp dropped the paint would not find its way into the nooks and crannys as well. But that is true of any paint as the paint tends to become more gelatinous. Warmer weather is better for application.

be aware, latex paint can take 28 days to fully cure (it does dry in a few hours tho), whereas oil based takes about 3-4 days...Benjamin Moore oil base is the shit, I painted cornhole boards with it 3 years ago and aside from the legs and corners that touch the ground and scrape, the boards are flawless

I love Aura for normal use. Two coats, no primer. Done. It's what we used in Mike's garage and it's held up for the last five years.

The reality is that paint can't really be any tougher than the drywall below it.

+2 on Benjamin moore Aura. Go with aura exterior low luster finish. Its super durable and washable. The coverage is pretty amazing also. As for a drywall primer go with Benjamin Moore super spec drywall primer/enamel undercoater, It sands real nice for a smooth finish before you put your top coats on. The Aura is pricey at probably around $60 a gallon in your area, however the drywall primer is pretty cheap, most likely $25 a gallon. Im up in canada so our prices vary on these products.

to figure out how much paint you need find out your total wall sq/ft and divide it by the spread rate of the paint. Aura is 350 sq/ft per gallon and you would need 2 coats. Even though aura is self priming to most substrates i would still prime the drywall (1 coat) prior to your top coats to ensure your patching/taped joints dont flash.

This is my 2 cents for a durable finish, Im a journeyman redseal painter and have been in business for the past 10 years. If you need any info on products PM me.

oh and aura is acrylic and has a 2 week curing time

Thanks for all the input guys. Looks like there are a couple of really good options, so it sounds like I'll get good results. Price isn't a super big deal since this is a pretty small job so I won't be cheaping-out just to save $20 now since it would cost me more down the road.
