Ferrari Thread
I would go with a midengined model if you're after appreciation. I don't see the Maranellos and Scagliettis aging very well, at least not as well as a Testarossa or F355.
My "realistic dream car" is an F430. Yeh it's slower than the 458 Italia but in my mind it is what a Ferrari is supposed to look like

sigh, some day, my dream car
I love Ferraris, I think they fall into the same class as BMWs with the stereotype of attention seeker/rich prick etc, but I think they are glorious drivers cars.
I'd love to say I will own an F40 some day, but realistically I will at least own a 348/355 or a Testarossa/512 TR sometime in the moderate futureComment

I've actually had a hankerin for a Mondial 3.2 for years now. The best ones available generally go for high $20s-low $30s. A few years ago the same cars were going for low-mid $20s.
They're looked down upon by the Ferrari elite, but it's a car I lusted over as a kid. They're also known as one of the last user servicable Ferraris, with enough power to get you into trouble, well balanced handling, and a pair of seats in the back in case you need room for four.
I'd still like one, but I have a feeling that any window I might have is closing by the day.'84 318i - Lapisblau/Schwarz (in cryosleep)

I think the 550 and 575s are the best looking modern Ferraris built short of the F40 or F50 (Yes I like the F50). There isn't a bad line on either car, from any angle.
After owning an Italian vehicle, they like to get out and be driven. Doesn't need to go far, but they do need to get out and stretch their legs. Parking them in the garage is asking for a cranky car.

i like the 575 (especially the optional modular wheels) but i don't like the paddle transmission very much. the 550 was built from 1996 to 2001. if i get a 98 or 99 i will qualify for classic insurance in 3 or 4 years. if i find an earlier one, i can get it in a year or two. perhaps in time, the 575 will be worth more but right now entry cost is generally still over 100k. i don't like the front end of the 575 quite as well either.

i'm not so sure about the mid engine cars being more valuable. i haven't priced 365 gtb/4 daytona's in a while but i would guess they are well north of 600k. to me, i believe the 550/575 are retro versions of the daytona.

i know what you are saying about making sure the car is driven on a regular basis. here in texas, it can be pretty much driven year around. i plan to drive it 2 to 3 times a month to keep the miles down and also to simply enjoy it. this wouldn't be something i could drive to work because i wouldn't be mentally able to leave it in the employee parking lot for 3 or 4 days while i am out on a trip.
on a related note, i read an article recently (wall street journal?) that spoke of hot investments. the number one item on the list was larger tracts of land with older standing timber. the number 2 investment was older porsche 911's and older ferrari's.Last edited by flyboyx; 12-15-2014, 10:57 PM.sigpic

If you guys could afford F40s you wouldn't be buying clapped out 80s bmws.
F40s have surpassed the 1mil mark, they are getting pretty insane.
Personally I like some of the less popular ferraris, and a couple of the popular ones:

275GTB

Are you looking for fun or investment or both? Not sure how much it will appreciate with the model not having any racing pedegree (admittedly im guessing as i havnt researched the marenello). I think the E-Types are very undervalued here vs europe and are due to rise, and they are works of art.
However, thats a lot of car for the money. $50k doesnt buy much these days.Last edited by naplesE30; 12-16-2014, 05:44 AM.Comment
