Wow! That seams like a great deal for such an epic car! If its a dream and its more or less obtainable, go for it! Make that dream come true! You deserve it! Nothing drives as beautifully as a Ferrari, the best driving car I've driven, besides the e30, is the f355. I'd go for it! Lol
Also, you live in Denver? I live in Denver lol!

Thats surprisingly affordable. I have found Hagerty to run on the high side. Grundy was about half the price of Hagerty when I used them, may be worth a phone call. Good luck on your purchase/search.

Grundy can suck it. When I enquired about insuring my 745i with them (arguably one of the nicest in the country at the time), the letter I received back read something along the lines of, "We don't consider a 1986 BMW to be a classic car, and as such it does not qualify for our program."

J.C. Taylor was more than happy to offer me classic coverage with a generous agreed value and I insured the car with them for over a decade with no complaints.

That's all I have to say about that.

ok....tomorrow i am going fly to new york and look at my first 550. it has about 35,000 miles.

i spent a bit of time on the phone today. i talked to a local new york mechanic that does ppi's on luxury autos. we spent about 40 minutes talking about the car and ferrari's in general. that was a valuable 40 minutes. even though he hasn't seen the car, he told me about lots of little things to look out for. one of the most important things i took from the conversation is that he mentioned service history is critical with a car like this. unless they are serviced by a ferrari dealer or a very renowned ferrari mechanic, most ferrari people won't buy it. he stated that unless good history is present with the sale of the car, you can expect it to be worth about 20% less than one that has it. i guess this means i won't be doing much work on a vehicle like this myself.

he also stated that ferrari uses proprietary software for their engine management. in order to get access to it. you have to pay the mother ship about 25k a year. as a result, no one can diagnose the engine unless you have/pay for the software. this is one of the main reasons why it is apparently important to get the work done at a reputable place.

if i like the car, i have this guy scheduled to come and look at it on monday or tuesday.

by the way....it is the one in the pic from my initial post.

All cars sold in the states must comply with the OBD-II Standard.

This means most of your usual codes, emission based, misfires, catalytic converters, evap, ect. will be readable with your standard scanner.

That said, they can tack on many manufacturer specific codes. All manufactures do it, to see everything on a VW/AUDI you have to have the VAG software.

i looked at the car the other day. i didn't buy it though. it has a few cosmetic issues that i was aware of before i went up there. also, the service history is missing. apparently the dealer in houston sent it along separate from the car and it hasn't arrived? also, there are other cars on the market for about the same money in better condition with less miles.

i have to say this was the fastest car i have ever driven. with the traction control on, you hit the gas and watch out!!!!! jesus christ it was fast. we took it out on some back roads. i tried launching it with traction on and off. the dealer was timing me with his wrist watch. since i am not used to the car, my zero to 60 time was about a second faster with traction. go figure. i did leave a stripe or two on the pavement.

the factory specs say zero to 60 in 4.2 seconds.

unfortunately, i didn't really get the chance to try out the cars cornering ability because we weren't anywhere near roads with twisties.

Honestly, 550/575 would be my top choice aside from a 512TR. Doug DeMuro on Jalopnik just did a conclusion on Ferrari ownership for a year and stated much of the same. It's a good read and would be helpful.

That car sounds like it would be a ton of fun to drive. I bet the exhaust sounds great on them.

550/575 is one of the best modern Ferraris, the 512TR is not. The '80s were a dark time for anything that wasn't a 288 or F40.
