Yellow pages for a patent attorney? I dont think so.

Luke, if you know a local lawyer - call him/her and tell him you need a patent lawyer - they probably can refer you. Patent guys are a much different breed and most other lawyers will not touch patent work - but they usually have contacts.

Be prepared to pay out the ass.

EDIT: and whatever you do DO NOT get one of those inventor's submission companies to "help" you.

No doubt, man. Thanks for the advice. I am hoping someone reputable here has one in the family...I may have to go ahead and just market the thing, hoping for the best!

Getting something patented is not the easiest thing. I know there are searches involved.

As for marketing it, if its not patented, be careful. You need to make sure that your prospective pitches dont just take your idea. You'll need secrecy and non-disclosure agreements and the like.

My housemates dad is a patent attorney. If you e-mail me I will get you in contact with him. He will probably tell you what you need to know to get started and the cost you are looking at. I am sure he would consult you for free on it. I will tell him about you and then have you contact him or you can give me your phone # and he can call you.

You might consider looking up an attorney that specializes in "intellectual property" as opposed to patent law. IP is the more commonly used legal title for those who represent and defends their clients creations. This is a huge field, and i know for a fact that there are a fuck-ton of IP lawyers in seattle. Your probably best off getting an IP lawyer that also has passed the patent bar exam. however, you should be aware that these guys know their shit, and as a result can charge alot of money for their services. My advice to you is to find a quality IP lawyer who works for a large corporation(a company related to the field that your product would fall into) who is willing to moonlight for a little extra cash. More importantly, if you are really sure that this idea would be worth alot of revenue, you need to put your money where your mouth is and be willing to take out loans to stake the initial investment. if your invention is what you say it is, you should have no problem hanging your ass out on the line while you wait for the huge returns.

Thanks for the input, Scott. Will call a couple of IP attorneys tomorrow.

claim patent applied for send in a shitty patent ap to the patent and trademark office, then no one can steal the idea. you could go this route for years till you get the backin from investors to actually do a good patent.
