that is part of it for sure, but its more likely this is where A LOT of the money is...... Personal data, technology schematics, corporate espionage, banks with money in them that is still perceived as being worth something.... You know shit like that generally low hanging fruit

not really... these are access attempts from IPs known to be malicious.

you can see what port/service they are attempting to access (ssh and mysql are popular).

any sysadmin/devops who leaves an exposed system with ping enabled is asking to be DDoS'd and should be fired immediately.

Service doesn't have to be enabled to be DDoSed. Just pushing enough traffic for a request will saturate the line.
