Almost every liberal in Portland is like this. Loud, proud, and unshakeable in their opinions. My deaf Swedish grandmother (RIP) would loudly talk about "colored" folks. Never in a negative way, but it was obvious she was from a much more parochial time.

My roommate and I were standing at the deli in FredMeyer waiting for our turn and suddenly out of no where she says "OMG, black people make the best Mac n cheese and fried chicken." Several people all around us and the guy helping everyone is black.
