Everything is 'built' now days. everyone who can spin a wrench is doing a "build".
I purposely avoid using either build or built for that reason, separate myself and what i can do from the cookie cutter cars.

Can someone explain to me the attraction of a lumpy cam?

So they're rebuilt to custom spec. 'Built' just seems like an overrated, overused word to me, in regards to engines.
I've been here long enough to remember that achievement in r3v patents. ;)

Built would be when you actually stripped it down and had proper machine work, then reassembled while taking measurements and checking clearances.
There is so much more to it than just slapping it all back together and crossing your fingers. So yea, "built" is in a different class than assembled. Anyone can purchase new parts at factory spec and slap it together. But if you are going for high horsepower, then hoping for the best just won't cut it.
On another note, maybe I do cast my own parts. Haven't you heard about that zero lag turbocharger?

I do what I have experience with or I'm comfortable with, leave the rest to people who know what they're doing.
I'm not questioning someone's ability to do so, I admire build threads here, but does the whole world need to know by reading a sticker?
Linguistically, is a 'built' engine one I replaced cams and injectors on or one that was fully taken apart and rebuilt with new aftermarket parts for higher power?

Hell, I went to Nissan Technical school to become qualified to rebuild their automatic transmissions, and I haven't rebuilt a single one since. Just not worth the hassle to me, because it is so far from "nothing to it".

All engines are built.
Always lol'd at the 'built not bought' slogan too. Like did you buy the cam or make it yourself by pouring moulten iron in your garage and then lathing it to spec?
/rant, thanks for your attention
Also, Molten.

Lopey Cam is the song of high performance no more no less, sadly I have been away from such things so long, I feel as if I have forgotten it allLast edited by mrsleeve; 06-30-2015, 04:48 PM.

The Camaro sounds like it might actually go somewhere if you put your foot down. The 540i just sounds lame.
Love a lopey idle. My Z has a cam in it. It has a lumpy idle, but runs smooth overall, and really comes on after 3000rpm. Just wish I had a decent car to put it in so I could let it stretch its legs.
Not mine, but it has the same cam, and similar work done:

LSx's have kind of a higher pitch sound to them, I prefer the deeper traditional sound of the older V8s. Don't get me wrong, if I here a LSx come thumping in, i'll turn my head and smile ;D
With 4 poppers and 6 bangers, i'll still be grinning if they are cammed up. Even my Corvair has a small cam
When they are smooth and quiet, it's kind of boring to me....
