That's likely just hail or super heavy rain. Tornadoes usually look like the Yin or the Yang on radar.

A hook echo is indeed likely a tornado. Especially when it is on the back of a level 3+ storm like the one ether d posted. The storm in the jakes post looks really knarly, though. The light color in the center is probably hail. According to the pic, the airplane is a American airlines Boeing 737-800 flying at 30,000 feet. That one wasn't me, but I have been in a situation or two like that in my day. There could be a few reasons why he did a left 360 rather than just simply going to the right around the storm. Possibly there was traffic to the south that would have been a conflict. Judging by the path compared to the red, it looks like they did a good job keeping the aircraft safe.

Oh, are you're an actual pilot? I thought you were into flying model planes in your garage between flipping homes.
That's bad ass! I can't believe I didn't know. I am very interested in aviation It's interesting to hear things from a pilots perspective.

Silly me. I should have considered the scale of the radar. I'm guessing it wouldn't resolve the "eye" of a twister, but maybe of a super-cell kind of storm.
This is more of a real-time kinda of view. Love this stuff.
I wanted to be an ATC at one point. Why? Not sure. Sitting in a dark room and telling planes what to do seems kinda fun. There are even some voice controlled ACT simulators out there ("Delta 318 turn right heading 180" - and it does!)- and I had one. Sick fun. They are really, really changeling. You have to think in 3d space, and temporal space as well. The word "vector" becomes a whole new meaning.

I didn't realize/believe it...that some of the highest paid pilot in the world were with FedEx until I was dating a stewardess who's dad was a ex-hawkeye pilot flying for FedEx. The guys at FedEx make serious bank...And a lot of them are navy. As you can guess why. Always on time, never calls in sick....etc.
UPS and FedEx. Their captains max out at a minimum of more than $200,000 a year.
