Fed ex guys do indeed make good money, but the amount of bank one makes isn't everything....personally, that kind of flying isn't for me. They do a lot of flying around in the middle of the night. That sort of abuse wears on your body over time. There have been studies on fed ex/ups pilots pertaining to this. Generally, a good number of them die less than 5 years after they retire. No shit! Ther are a few good reasons to work there though. Job security is one. They are one of the few airlines that have never laid off pilots.

I wouldn't put a ton of stock into the accuracy of the article you quoted. There are lots of variables that probably aren't considered in those studies. Retirement contributions being one of them. Some companies like delta and United contribute something like 15% of ones salary.

The best way is to take the hourly rate x the amount a crew member flies in a year. figure an average pilot flies about 7-800 hrs.

Well, I bet flying at 11pm to 6 pm (or something like that) would suck. But to end a career, and pad a nice nest egg, I can see why someone would.

I can't tell you of how many stories I've heard of men that pass away shortly after retiring - in all sort of fields(usually construction or some hard working on-their-fee-all-day job). It's almost as if they are men that are made to work hard, and it's their whole identity. You take that away, and bam, they just pass away. Crazy. Kinda off topic, but oh well.

Oh, and here's another video - 24 hours of fedex.

I'll admit, I kinda have a hard-on for fedex - I just find logistics interesting. I read a book about the start of fedex once. It was really insightful. It basically answered the questions: How do you start a shipping company when you have no clients? Chicken vs the Egg sort of thing. The first few years were so lean, that would calculate the cost of fuel for a run, vs a last minute ticket on a commercial red-eye flight. Many packages were hand delivered by their first employees acting as runners on normal plane, because the cost of fueling up a jet was too high for a two way trip. So they would just pack huge bags and pay the fees.

Side note - in Europe, I understand that at night, they strip out the seats, and run cargo in the passenger cabin - to save on costs.

110k/yr isn't too great until you factor in the part about 5 to 6 days per month. That sound pretty damn good. Who does he work for? Do they hire Americans or is an ATPL required?
