    22re water pump gasket BITCH

So I have a non BMW related automotive question.
I put a new water pump on the 22re in my Toyota truck months ago and I have been through two gaskets on it and it is leaking again from the exact same spot it did the first two times.
Now I have done a share of gaskets and water pumps in my life and never had an issue like this.
Do any of you have advice on something I could do while installing my third gasket to prevent another leak?
I really don't want to have to do it a forth time.
    Thanks
    sigpic

    Papaer gasket?

Are you installing it dry or with silicon. I see people all the time use silicone, when they shouldn't. Paper gaskets should always be installed clean and dry.

If you are installing it dry, and the leak is in the same spot, maybe corrosion has made the mounting surface less than true. Maybe try putting a dab of silicone on that spot.

i spray permatex copper gasket spray on paper gaskets. it is a great product and i have had fantastic results with it. i recommend with 2 thumbs up.

personally, i do not recommend rtv. it is very difficult to make this stuff seal.

use the red gooey gooey stuff on paper gaskets, it is not exactly RTV by any means but it helps a little and makes sure the gasket doesnt fall down and get misaligned. you paint it on with a small brush

This is what I'm talking about. Don't do this. If you must, put one or two SMALL drops to help hold it in place. Any more and you are keeping the papaer gasket from doing its job.

Paper gasket, clean surface, and you will have a seal that will out last the part.

use a razor blade and scrape the surface of the block clean. Be careful not to scratch the block with the blade.

the red stuff you paint on is bad to use on paper gaskets??? the permatex high tack stuff

its the only way I know of to get the m20 waterpump gasket from not falling out of place when you put it on lol

OR you can just use RTV or coat the gasket in a thin layer of rtv. BS on keeping paper gasket from doing its job, paper gasket isnt gonna do shit on a 25+ year old block that has scrapes all over the surface from 100s of shitty mechanics. RTV that shit and its good.

                        Ok.

There's a reason why a gasket coated in RTV is easy as hell to remove. A paper gasket should need to be scraped off, not peel off. I say again, a properly used paper gasket will out last one that was hacked up with RTV every single time. I'm not a hobbyist mechanic, and I didn't just come up with these thoughts out of thin air. I found out the hard way, even after a few long time mechanics who tought me, told me the same thing and I didn't listen.

Again. If you prep the surface properly, a paper gasket is the best option for long term sealing in places designed for it. Even a 25 year old engine has probably only had the water pump replaced a handful of times. I NEVER use rtv unless specified, and I also never have issues.

RTV on paper gaskets is a bandaid for the inexperienced. Why not try to learn how to make repairs the way things were intended to be done, rather than make a sloppy mess of things.

Sorry for the redundance, this is just a huge pet peeve of mine. Fortunately I didn't run across it while working amongst factory trained technicians. Now I'm in the rail industry that shit is everywhere, I'm constantly correcting half assed repairs.

                        I'm done though, carry on.

^ I agree with everything you've said. We rarely use RTV at the shop.

Yes I agree with the rest of the yhehoos on here as well, clean a prep the mating surfaces and install the gasket dry.

I have in the past with gaskets that are a PIA to get into place put a very very small thin spot of RTV on the very outside edge of 2 or 3 bolt holes, to just hold the gasket to which ever surface I am trying to keep it stuck to. But again this is not getting close to the main compression areas of the gadgets and matting surfaces, and its very very little RTV like I said very thin and very minimal on the out side edge of a bolt hole

I try not to use it as much as possible, but at least in my experience there are surfaces where It literally would not stop leaking without some RTV.

Like My Diff paper gasket, and water pump on current car were fine. But on last car i swear someone took a screwdriver to the water pump area.
