I won a Duffy! WTFOMGBBQ woot!

I am so freakin happy man, I dunno if really any of you would have any reason to know what a Duffy is, but its a 1st place trophy at the IKF (karting sanction body) Grand Nationals. The IKF used to be really really big, still is, but not quite as many people are in it as there used to be in the 80's for example. Back east road racing is a little bigger I think, and they're governed by the WKA and host the "Supernats" at Road America once a year. That would be fun to go to too, I think. Guess I'm bringing it down, but I shouldn't. It is what it is, and winning 3 Duffys gives someone the "expert" status along with allowing them to run a yellow number plate. Big deal thing in karting anyhow.

It was one of my home tracks, and most of the people in my class that could run at the top were already local so I knew how to run with them. I entered two classes, one of which was TAG Light which I placed 3rd overall in through two heats otherwise could have had a possible second but botched a turn on the last lap, and 125cc National Cup Light (Only one engine package allowed, blueprinting is permitted though) that I somehow won. Its an average placement after two heats, and the second is a tie breaker if two finishing positions and drivers are perfectly swapped. 1st heat went in the top 3 me, some kid, and a buddy of mine Scott, then in the 2nd Scott and I ran nose to tail 90% of the time and I was planning to pop out and draft by on the last lap to win that heatto better my average position between 3rd and 2nd, but even if Scott had gotten 2nd, he would have overtaken me in the average of 1st and 2nd. What kind of luck would I have though when one of his reed valves broke on the LAST LAP? Put him at the back of that heat, and he came in 5th I think averaged total. LUCKY, but persistant and consistant is my game I guess.

Here's my little pile so far of my 06/first full season of racing (Duffy is far right, two tall ones onthe left are Nov 05...)

Would be nice if I can keep that up. Leading points in one of my classes I believe, and 3rd, 2 pts behind 2nd and 30 points behind 1st (Scott) in my other. I botched a race or two in the beginning of the season in that class, obviously managing to help mess up the rest of the season points. I think I need to place ahead of Scott in all 3 remaining races, which realistically speaking is unlikely but possible to have a chance of winning the regional championship for that as well. One can always dream and hope, right?

Anyway, had to say something. yay.

In the next few years when I gather up enough money I plan to break into SCCA club racing with either a formula ford or formula continental. Open wheel cars, the ford is 1.6L pinto block power without wings whereas the FC is basically the ford with wings and a 2.0 block or the newer cars run Zetec power. Those would be really fun classes, or if I managed to get sponsorship to break in (haha, yeah okaayyy) I'd love to dabble in D-Sports racer. Full bodied cars 900 lbs dry weight I think about, powered by liter bike engines or turbo 600's. Theyre SUPER fast.
I'll look around for a couple pics. I didnt take many, and several didnt turn out, especially any of me on the track so probably none of those :(.

Here's a spattering of pictures and a short video clip from the races...

Ready to go practicing in the morning. Night before the first day of racing, paid practice day but I didn't bother. Practice wheels/tires on it (race tires from last weekend). Paddock was pretty empty still at that point, too.

Baby's new shoes :) I ran them a little high pressure for the heat but I'm going to try to get two weekends out of them and race them again next month at ThunderHill.

Yeah, I did this. Well my kart did, when he ran into me :( At least its not my kart.

See? Matching colors on my L rear tire...

                Lunch time Friday--I think.

After the 2nd heat of the race I placed 3rd overall in (Thursday), standing and doing absolutely nothing waiting on Tech. bleh..

After my 2nd heat of the race I won talking with my good buddy Scott after he broke on the last lap. He was pretty good spirited about it overall, and glad one of us got the win out of it even if he couldn't.

After I put everything back together on Saturday I took a picture with Marin Karting's trailer in the background. The kart was bought from them originally ~2 years ago. Plenty of money sweat and curse words have gone into it since then ;P Still my baby, i dont mean all the things I say shoosh shoosh haha

On the way home on satuday after the awards ceremony thingie.

Short video, I am 2nd in the line of 3 and 2nd throughout the rest of the video. Like I said it was the whole plan just to stay behind Scott, otherwise if we would try to prematurely pass eachother (as long as I could stay kept up it was all good) drafting doesnt help either of us doing that.
Click it I guess to go to photobucket and watch. Hopefully it doesnt get overwhelmed and crap out.

Ohhh daaamn! haha. Need any help with that maybe this weekend? Really not much left on it aside from maaaybe being able to jockey that damn engine into place huh? That and the driveshaft you were having fun with. I guess and everything else too..get on AIM sometime we can figure something out if you need an extra few hands to crush.

Cars with suspension are a LOT different, havent had much track practice in a race/car recently anyhow. I want to get out on a trackday someday and just tool around, too bad I dont have a hardtop car. That puts a little damper on things and I do like my back seat. If you had extra room I'd push to have that scrapped e30 turned into a track rat and maybe run it in the longass NASA race at Thill but we've already gone through that :)

Awesome dude - I LOVE karts. The guys at the track are always so chill.

If you are far behind, guys will come up and offer help to fix it, or even just straight up sell you shit they don't need for next to nothing. Or just tweak a carb for you, a clutch, what ever. They just want to race.

Karting reminds me of the SCCA racing 10-20 years ago. Just guys out to have good safe fun. (well till you get to the nationals - then all best are off)

Dude - why is that exhaust pipe so flat and plain in your pics?
                      A 100cc non-shifter kart? Regulation exhaust?

BTW - for those that think we are talking about something you granddaddy buys you for your labe ass bar mitzvah... think again. The middle line racing is karts that do this...

                      Manufacturer: Emmick
                      Chassis: Tube Frame
Steering: Direct, column-mounted steering arms (.75 turns lock to lock)
Brakes: 4-wheel disc with adjustable bias
                      Engine: PRD 125-cc
                      Maximum rpm: 13,000
                      Output: 25 horsepower
                      Transmission: Dry clutch
                      0-60 m.p.h.: 5.9 seconds
                      Top speed: +90 mph
                      Cornering ability: +1.5 G's

13,000 RPM, Power to weight ratio that is crazy. and 1.5 g's in a corner. (omm HELLOOOOOOO - See also F1 cars.)

Congrats on the award...too little people know how cheep it is to run a kart(2-5k to get started, 2k a year to keep up) that it's a shame..I've see guys spend more on their bronzit eta...

                      WTF..

Ah yes, karting is definately a great bang for the buck. One of my good friend racer buddies stuck his motor twice and both times was helped out almost immediately to get back on the track again. The second time (3rd piston including the original), he didnt have another so he got one from someone he was racing in the same class with even though if his motor was fixed there was the possibility he could have beaten the kid who supplied the new piston. It didnt happen, but there was the chance, everybody just wants to race!

Regarding my exhaust, it has the cone inside, and doesnt get quite as big around as a shifter pipe. It expands from the header flex tubing, then is flat inside for a short bit, then a perforated cone within the pipe comes back down while the outside continues straight. Same function, but the endcap then is right there and functions as the silencer, so pipe/silencer is all one main piece. It's 125cc by the way, but correct, only one speed.

Ha ha... gotta show off all your kart specs too ;P
Mine are pretty close except for the brakes up front, none of those allowed in my class.
One speed makes my acceleration time slower especially running a 16/78-85 gear ratio! Yikes!! but I always seem to do well on the starts in my class :)
Similar HP output, max RPM in road racing is 14.5k~ish, but 17 on sprint tracks just to get down the front straight and make use of the powerband on the infield.
                          CRG FTMFW!!!

Oh hey Ben, thanks bud :)
