I just got a macbook about three weeks ago, and I love it. It's very portable for school, and not too heavy. I was a bit turned off by the idea of a glossy screen, but it actually looks great. They are plenty fast for most applications, I went with the low end 1.83ghz and upgraded the ram to 1gb, which I would highly recommend. The only real drawback on the macbook is the lack of a dedicated graphics card, so if you play a lot of graphics intense games, the MBPro would be a better option. That being said, I really only use my computer for word processing, music, internet, and some occasional photoshopping, and the macbook handles all of those just fine. With the student discount they're a pretty good deal and I'd definitely recommend one.

i hate macs, get a pc.
everyone in the school scene uses macs because they donate to the schools every year or so. if it wasn't for doing that, mac would have gone under MANY years ago. ...f^c#in one button mouse retardedness!!!!
many people say macs handle graphics and media better than PC's but the interface is less versatile...it may be easier for all those that don't know how to use the programs they are trying to work with  they need the "user friendly" stupid slow interfaces
PC's are easier to upgrade later down the road. ...and you can find one cheap nowadays too. 2G Pent4 is stupid cheap right now. ...just never buy the top line of any type of computer, in a couple months it will be outdated and just as cheap as all the other lower lines. so it goes with technology

all the recent advertizing that says PC's are prone to viruses and MAC's never crash is a LOAD OF BULLSHIT.
i'm never had an un-easily resolvable virus issue with any of my PCs, MAC OR PC, you just use McAfee or Norton and update it every so often and your always fine, just don't be downloading stupid shit from random sources that you have no clue what your downloading and you will never get a virus.
ever heard the term that someone is having an "apple-moment" - it's when they really don't freeze or shutd down, but their processing systems can't handle highly extensive multitasking with multiple programs...or if you try to do things too fast they have trouble keeping up ...so they slow down and just pause for forever until they finally do the previous command. but then they don't follow up like PC's can.... they manage their memory differently... it's hard to explain.
...and not to mention that if you have a MAC, you can't always take your files to a PC, whereas if you have a PC (EVERYONE IN THE REAL WORLD IS PC BASED) you can still dump your files into a MAC, it just creates extra data files to explain everything to itself. ...How much hardware is out there for MACs. (um, only apple crap) .... NOW, how much Hardware is out there for PC base? ...(UM, EVERYTHING):ohsnap:
why do people think MAC's are so damn good? oh, that's right, marketing and educational field flooding.:curse: ...all programs are originally created for PC base and then converted for MACs

Also they a two button mouse now. A Mac is a great buy and I have honestly been interested in one, I just dont have the money right now and have a perfectly good working Sony Vaio laptop. Someday I will own one, now is not the time. If I was in the market again I would definetely be consider a Mac.Keep on Keepin' on.

the general concensus on pc vs. mac seems to be you like whichever one you use more often.
that being said, windows pc's are more virus prone then macs, but all those random ass linux pc distros are almost never targeted by viruses from what i understand.: : 1984 318i : : PNW E30 Crew : : Sold!!

I was a PC user for all my life.
I decided to try an Apple when I got to college. It has been nothing but good for me. I am not a very heavy user. At times I will spend hours in Photoshop and Dreamweaver... but the majority of the time I am surfing the internet and listening to music. And you know what my computer does these as well as any other computer. Ive never had a problem. My computer seems plenty fast, as fast as the Windows boxes I use at work.
And now that Macs can run Windows alongside OSX there is no reason for me to go back. OSX is a great everyday system, safe and secure. Windows is great, but why deal with possible viruses and such if you dont have to?
In the end, a Windows based machine will be a better deal, but I am willing to pay a little extra for a more pleasurable experience. And the new Macbook brings this experience that much closer to all at a decent price, especially with a free iPod and printer which you can sell to get a chunk of change back.
Let me also mention the new MacBook has super easy harddrive and RAM upgrading tricks.Last edited by bwanac; 07-24-2006, 10:46 PM.

Now that they stopped overclocking proprietary hardware and went with an intel base they are basically PCs. And you can do the upgrades just as easy on a PC (actually easier, they come apart easier).
You can upgrade the basics on a lappy pretty easily, its the fact that most things (on most lappys) are integrated in the mainboard. It leaves you with the wifi, cpu, hd, and memory on most lappys. Although, acer developed a platform that might make their lappys as flexible as your average PC tower.
Speaking of Acer, Circuitshitty has their Aspire for like $550 right now.Im now E30less.
