Look down at your hands. Study them for a minute.

Now imagine those same hands with calusses from using tools , and grease embedded under the fingernails so ingrained that you cannot scrub it out, there are small nicks and cuts in those hands and dirt that is pressed into the skins texture. The smell from those hands have a decidely rubbery pertroleum smell to them which is annoying as it has been present for so long.

Now imagine using those hands to eat, greet others, use a cell phone so the smell is close to your nostrils and mouth, pick things up, and all the regular daily tasks that we all take for granted and perform with clean ,unscathed, and unblemished hands.

Have you made your decision yet?

OK, so since the consensus seems to be "stay in school", let me chime in.

I started installing car stereo when I was 17, in 1980. Almost immediately, I started making tons of money. Like $35,000 in 1982...which was a BUNCH of money back then. More than any 1st year lawyer, accountant, doctor (actually, about the same). All through the 80's and early 90's, I made great money...but blew it all, because it came so easy.

When I was about 26, a guy was watching me work on his Mercedes. I am a pretty big guy, then I was about 6'1", about 200lbs. He was watching me shove myself into his dash and into the trunk of that 560SEC. He told me he was a Chiropractor, and asked how old I was. I told him 26.

He told me that if I didn't change my line of work, I would be in a wheelchair by the time I was 40.

His prophecy was not true, fortunately. I am now 42. But, let me tell you...I live with pretty much chronic pain. I am very intense in my work style, and these days I have to be careful with every move.

Here is a quick list of muscular/skeletal issues:

      1. L4/L5 vertebrae are so worn, no Chiro can help. Muscle is all that hold them in line. Move wrong and I get to stay in one place for a week or two. I am certain that I will end up in a wheelchair, just a matter of when. I do stretches daily, just so I can work.

      2. Bursitis: (in both forarms) This wonderful inflammation of the "bursa" causes me so much pain that you would just not believe. I have been working many many time with tears rolling down my face...but gotta keep going, morgtage waits for no man.

3.Tennis elbow: HUGE burning pain, caused by working. I have never played tennis in my life!

This is a short list, believe me. My hands are so calloused that huge chunks peel off...but I need the callouses to make my hands tough enough for work.

Get your ass back in school. It is so hard to go back, just stay in now.

You can always go turn wrenches at a delaership with a degree in ME. You will NEVER find a job as an engineer with a 20 year history of wrenching.

      Get that degree.
