    Question on car laws in Japan. Canonly own a car with less than??

    I heard that Japan has a very strict law saying that you can only own a car with less than some insane amount of mileage and after that, I dont remember if you have to rebuils the engine or get rid of the car or not drive it. Anyone with info on this? I dont like spreading bullshit. Thanks in advance.

    From what I hear, after so much time, it costs more in taxes than what the car is worth to keep on the road. Out with the old and in with the new I guess.

        I was always told that in Japan you have to rebuild the motor at 30,000 or replace it.

        I know there is a big market here that buys the used 30,000 mile engines.

          Perchance are Beemers sold in Japan? If they are, where do the motors go after 30,000 miles?

            not true. as mentioned above, it just costs more to keep an older car registered, and they have a crazy machine that u have to drive yer car though every 2or3 years, that tests brakes/susp/emmissions...i had to drive my buddys 4runner though one when he bought it used...it was fun:grin:

              As Nazi as it may sound, that's sounds like a great idea. Don't get me wrong, I love my e30, but there are plenty of cars on the road that really shouldn't be there. A 1985 Ford f150 with 250k for example.

                    JCI gets stricter after the car is older than 10 years of age. Ask Court, he was stationed in Japan.

                      yes JCI get's stricter the older the car gets. Don't know where you heard that you have to keep mileage so low though. Most Japanese cars have low mileage, because they are only used on weekends. During the week most people take the train, or ride bikes to work.

                      There is no way Japan would have that much much land to support the number of junkyards to handle the overflow of used cars. If that was the case, I'd have a couple spare Euro spec M50 engines :)

                            Yeah, the older cars are cheap as hell because of that. People don't feel like going through the hassle of JCI'ing their car, so they just junk it, or sell it. It's a paradise for hack mechanics. The only place I know where you can either spend $5000 and get a semi nice Skyline, or just get 2 cars with a brand new JCI on them.
                            Can't wait to go back.
                            p.s. BMW's weren't very popular in Okinawa, I didn't see them much on the mainland either, but I imagine there's a pretty good market for them.

                              Dude my 1985 Ford F250, my first car I loved, sat in my grampa's side yard for 15 years. I miss that thing, it had just over 100,000 miles on it and ran beautifully when we sold it. Having 2 massive gas tanks and getting just over 12 MPG sucked though.
