    F1 News: Reanult's Fate Sealed?

For those of you who follow this stuff, the FIA has recently ruled that the mass damper used by Renault has been deemed illegal and can no longer use this feature in their car for the remainder of the season. The problem with this is Renault's '06 spec car was designed around with this feature in place. Since they did not run it at Germany or Hungary, Alsonso has been way off his pace and that has allowed Schuey back into the game. With Renault not allowed to use this device any longer, would it be fair to say their hopes of a back to back title have been extinguished? Ferrari have been gaining momentum the last 4 or 5 races and it looks like nothing will stop them at this point. Because of the FIA's decision, I'm speculating MS has a very good chance of being champ again.

I think so - the stewards at the German GP thought the whole mass damper idea was hunky-dory cool and didn't see an issue with it....but Renault elected not to use it anyway (probably for fear of being DQ'd or penalized by the FIA). Despite what the German GP stewards think, the FIA's decision to label the mass damper as illegal is a blow to Renault if you ask me. Steve Matchett even stated that Renault designed their entire '06 car around this mass damper device as an integrated part of the car....now that its deemed illegal it has had a dramatic effect (negatively speaking) on the cars' overall performance. Unless they can come up with something to help make up for this now-banned device, I'm affraid Alonso's hopes of another title have been dashed.

The boys in red have to be smiling right about now.

I agree with Joe318is. Renault was off the pace in Germany but Alonso would have won Hungary if his wheel lock (or whatever it was) hadn't come off. Button was gaining but I don't he could have beaten Alonso straight up. Alonso outperformed Ferrari but there were a lot more factors (rain).

It'll be interesting to see what happens this weekend. Hopefully the combination of no mass-damper and Michelin throwing in the towel early doesn't kill Renault's championship run.

But then I also hope that Honda and Button's win wasn't a fluke because I have been rooting for them for over 2 years and my wishes finally came true at Hungary. I hope they carry the pace and competitiveness through the rest of the season.
