Stuff can happen randomly anywhere too, though. I live in Western Mass, in the greater Springfield area (the west-most "big city") and in 2011 we had a pretty insane tornado rip right through the valley... Easily over a 70-100 mile path of distruction that you can still see the outline of from high ground due to all the broken/ rooted trees.
Crazy to have happened here. Snowstorms? Yes, but tornadoes... No way.

Hope forum members down south fair the next two big storms well. Hang in there.

Cat 5 ain't no messin' around - that will just plain blow buildings down. And then comes the water. It's like tornado-level damage, plus waves and surge, plus rain.

BBC report - "The four "most solid" buildings on Saint Martin, shared by France and the Netherlands, were destroyed, French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said."

I think that was 2008-2009 nvm it was 2011 flooding was mainly just the down town area and council tucky i mean bluffs lol. I live in west omaha and didn't see any signs of it. The main reason it flooded was because of the army core of engineers didn't have their heads screwed on straight and waited to start releasing waters from the dams along the Missouri river and the massive amounts of snow they had up in Montana, south Dakota and north Dakota all melted right at once and filled up the lakes causing them to have to release all the water they could. There are still signs of the flooding but not much. Our biggest issue here is hail storms. Them fuckers can be something fierce. This year alone the roofing companies are in the hundreds of millions in revenue.

I really hope people are going to evacuate.

I know it sounds bad, but I have a hard time feeling sorry for people who totally can evacuate, but choose not to and wanna "ride out" a cat 4 or 5 hurricane.

I heard there's also 2 bigass tropical storms brewing in the Gulf.

from a blog post on the same site, it looks like the pilot went in empty and evac'd people back to new york.

flew back out along a path in one of the calmer areas between the "arms".

titanium balls. give that pilot a medal. they might have saved someone's life.

well, just looking at the radar depiction in the post above, there is some heavy rain over the airport. storms in the northern hemisphere, spin counter clockwise and judging by the route, they flew through some pretty nasty weather. however, the airplane is built to handle turbulence of this sort and more. there is also no limitation to wind speed while the airplane is enroute.

the problem comes in during takeoff and landing. i've never flown a 737, but the crosswind limitation is probably around 30 knots. there is no headwind limitation, but the the maximum tailwind is probably 10 knots. i would presume it could have been a challenge meeting those limits.

the wind that far from the center won't be anywhere close to that speed. i don't know what it was but i would guess less than 60kt?

what i am saying is that if that is a headwind, the airplane technically is certified to do it. i have made a few landings with winds north of 50kts. they have been turbulent approaches but relatively uneventful. if it was a crosswind, there is no way even chuck yeager could make it work

the a320 has a crosswind component of 35kt. it is higher number than the boeing because the airplane sits higher off the ground on taller landing gear. there is less chance of striking the wing tip. i have made a couple landings under those conditions. i have to say my heart rate goes up a few points in that situation.

in fact i looked it up and attached the airport diagram. judging by the way that storm is oriented, i would guess the winds are coming from the south south west. judging by the diagram, i would say he landed with a pretty good cross wind on runway 26. but again, i highly doubt it would have been more than 30 kts.
